I think that what will happen is: We will have access to our characters in beta, and will keep the progress, because its essentially already 2.0, but its not polished enough to release to the normal audience. We however, will have no problems with the fact that there might still be some problems

Having the game be down for that long sucks quite a bit. But on the flip side of the coin, 4-8 month beta? Sounds about right. That's equal to about 2-2.5 major patch releases at the current schedule, so just enough time to fix any really glaringly bad issues, see how people respond, then patch up anything that people complain about.

You guys should reffer to the timeline of events in the pdf files. FFXIV will go down for quite a few month and once they shut it down the first time it will not be turned on again.

Why? Because 2.0 is played on new servers and even though we will be in a completely new world, our characters will retain all the progress we've made so far.

This translates to the following: if they transfer character data once, but then turn 1.0 back on and we update that data with new adventures and items then the data transfer process will need to repeated yet again, simple as that, SE will not do more than one data transfer.

It's safe to assume that once 1.0 goes offline, it will be for good.

downloading the client doesnt give you access to the beta though

They may run 2.0 beta and 1.0 simultaniously and only shut down 1.0 servers near the end of 2.0 beta to start porting data for the final launch.

Seems like the logical course of action if you ask me.

this is probably what's going to happen, playing beta with our 1.0 characters not gonna happen O.O .
