That this need to be seen as competent was weighing so heavy on them that I think it was pulling down their ability to focus and that every little hiccup along the way was only adding to that weight.

I've noticed this a LOT with WoW expats. they're so used to being berated for making mistakes that they feel stressed out when making mistakes even when no one is berating them.
