How Do You Run Out of Digital Content - Mountain Zu - Mountain Dew Promotion

I have been diligently saving my points to try and get some of the more expensive items. As I get close they all sell out. There are a few left so I decided to keep trying for the physical items and I didn't get the mount because being it's DLC I didn't think for one second you would run out... WTF guys? This is so stupid. It's bad enough that you barely had any of the physical items but now you're running out of digital content items...?

Why on Eorzea didn't you put a disclaimer of some sort on the mount so that we would know it was limited?!

They could easily hand it out infinitely some way. But the CD-key method is finite to their algorithm.

limiting digital goods creates FOMO. FOMO creates urgency and that urgency leads to bigger profits.

    This.

It's done intentionally to create an artificial scarcity.

How is it bigger profits when people are now going to stop buying the product since they can no longer get the mount? They didn't even tell it was limited.

Because when something isn't limited it's not necessarily going to sell as well. You can have a pile of 50 items laying around and ppl will pass right by them or wait to see if they go on sale. You could possibly sit on these products forever. But the moment you add that "limited time" or "limited amount" aspect to something, ppl feel like its now or never so they buy it even if they are not sure if they want it or will use it, which is also why they can sell them at higher prices. And when you add something like limiting the access being Moutain Dew to the mix, that causes ppl who normally wouldn't buy a dew to go out and buy them even if they do not want to drink them, bringing in more profit for Mtn Dew.

Then once a precedent is set, ppl will now see future promotions like this and know from the get go that its limited, they will rush it even harder. Which makes it more lucrative for both Mtn Dew and SE. It's really basic economics. Create artifical scarcity and you will reap higher profits.

They don't. However, like Anima said above, FOMO is always part of these types of promotions because it drives sales for the product. In this case, Pepsi.

Its the codes themselves, its happened a number if times with SE. Basically they produce only a certain stock of them right from the start rather than produce codes as they go. In the end if theres something you really want from SE code related, not just with FFXIV, do so asap...

in the details of the promo it says "while supplies last", or something similar. plainly put: they only issued x amount of codes and they didnt want to issue extra cuz reasons. turns out it was a success by their standards since they sold out. I do agree though, that is absolute trash to have customers wasting their money for nothing. really really shady and cringe to pull that type of thing.
