I enjoyed the philosophical discussion and contemplation of what truly constitutes ‘life’ in the expansion’s later half. It’s an interesting approach to a theme that’s often portrayed as very ‘black and white’. Especially considering the Endless are artificial creations, but through the uploading of memory data and repurposing souls gain a form of ‘life after death’.
Ultimately you have to question what it is that makes someone ‘alive’? Is having memories enough? Is a soul enough when it’s not even the original one?
There’s also the idea of this subverting a natural balance; shown through the need for repurposed souls to ‘sustain’ the Endless. So it’s not only ‘life’ itself that’s brought into question but the cost that comes with it.
I had issues with the many, many quests but I appreciated that they tried to develop the narrative around exploring the diverse and disparate peoples inhabiting the area. And of course the contrast this creates between Tural and Alexandria, where all people are (intended to) become one as the Endless, locked within the confines of living memory.
I have my criticisms of the story etc too of course but I don’t want that to make it seem like I don’t appreciate the good/interesting things about the expansion. If anything my criticisms are just a result of being far too invested lol
