Sqaure Enix may be developing a MOBILE version of FF14 with Tencent

eXputer has learned that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is currently in development. As per the site's sources, bringing the popular MMORPG to mobile devices is a joint project of Square Enix and Tencent.

In 2018, both companies signed a letter of intent to form a strategic alliance, and in 2021, Yosuke Matsuda, then President of Square Enix, confirmed that some projects were underway. To date, none of these projects have been officially announced.

Earlier this year, Reuters reported that in December 2023, Tencent canceled an unannounced mobile game based on Square Enix's popular franchise 'NieR' due to challenges in finding a compelling monetization model.

I do not think this game can even run on mobile. Its possible they're improving the companion app. But anything else just sounds like clickbait to me

When Nexon was developing a "mobile version" of FFXI it turned out it was going to be like a card game or something. It got cancelled so we never saw it, but it wasn't going to be the mobile port we initially thought.

I would assume if this is real it would be something like that, some kind of spin off gacha game and not a real mobile port.

They made one out of FF7 already, just replace those characters with the Scions and FF7 themes with 14s. Would not be hard at all to do tbh. The gacha aspect comes from pulling on weapons and you get all characters automatically for free.

To be fair, I actually loved the transition to mobile for old school RuneScape but it's point and click adventure game DNA made it a much better fit for actually bringing the whole game to mobile.

I can't imagine FFXIV on mobile.. entirely. Like I'm more willing to believe in a weird gacha or something yeah. But then again, if they could make a button that I mash that moves my character and does my rotation for me in duty support.. lmao. Grim thoughts.

I'll reserve judgement until we have more information, but they might be hedging their bets. I'm sure the lukewarm reception to the latest expac has reached the folks at the top by now, XI isn't bringing in much since it can't get truly new content, their single player games haven't been bringing in the numbers they really wanted them to, and they know they are staring down the barrel of some very big titles from other very big studios in the next handful of months.

This could be the best thing that ever happened to XIV. A simple mobile game for the folks that don't like complexity, and this version can be redesigned again to not cater to the lowest common denominator.

Or it could be the biggest, steamiest pile of garbage ever developed. I guess we'll see. Weird that it's with Tencent though. I didn't think they would roll the dice with a developer from that region again after 1.0 and the "horse birds" fiasco.

If anything, it will probably just a be spin-off if this even is believable. Or, a new companion app.

I'd take it with a big scope of salt before we see anything official announced, or a late april fools.

Gacha and mobile games have literally kept some of my favorite games and IPs alive by creating a steady cash flow.
