SPOILER WARNING!! Do not read unless you have completed DT MSQ.
This expansion was marketed as the WoL's "vacation" expansion, where they can finally stand aside and have a nice time becoming an adventurer again. However, I feel that the issue on Wuk Lamat came in Act 2 (where it's after she becomes Dawnservant with Koana). The issue is that this expansion was in some kind of half-limbo on what to do with the WoL.
Is this expansion about building Wuk Lamat up and therefore have the WoL get a proper vacation and feel like an adventurer again? Or is it about the WoL doing classic badass things? It feels like it tries to be both, and ultimately falls short in both aspects. In Act 2, in comes yet another world ending threat, and WoL pulls out the Azem crystal. I'm sure everyone in this scene was like "okay, vacation is over, time for WoL to end this once and for all". Next thing you know, Wuk comes crashing through the instance saying cheesy lines, it does not feel great at all.
However, on the other hand I feel that it is completely possible to have Wuk Lamat take the spotlight without making her this insufferable.
TLDR; This expansion should have went either in 2 ways:
- Have WoL take on a proper "mentor" role and stand aside completely
- OR have WoL become the MC again in the second act
Here's what I mean by point 1.
Wuk is obviously not as strong as Bakool Jaja off the bat. In the current DT story, it shows her weak, but then all of a sudden she gets strength from her own resolve (um, what?) and manages to beat him. One way to handle this is to have WoL have a better role in "training" her up by building her mental strength and therefore build her resolve up.
Currently, WoL does do that to some extent, but I feel it needs to be more involved, therefore cementing WoL as a mentor who is standing aside in favour of letting their student take the wheel. For example, in the solo instance with Bakool Jaja as Wuk Lamat, first half of the fight as a cutsccene, where the WoL can give "encouragement" as dialogue choices. Then the second half can be WoL entering the actual instance, fending off the lackeys so they dont overwhelm Wuk. Sometimes, Wuk will falter and WoL can interact with her (right click or something) to bring her back into the fight.
In the final fight, have Wuk Lamat be the one to be "trapped" inside Sphene's arena, and the WoL be the one to smash into the instance instead. This not only implies WoL's strength, but also is a nice throwback to the previous expansions whereby now you're the one doing it. Lore wise, they can probably pull a "Sphene is remembering something about Wuk Lamat and therefore deems Wuk as the biggest threat", which also makes sense.
I just feel that Wuk had suddenly become this super strong MC all of a sudden, when WoL only said such a limited number of lines to build her confidence and basically had almost no hand in being her "mentor".
