    Reminder for mentors.

Mentors are veteran players who chose to offer their time and experience to help guide new adventurers. To facilitate their assistance, mentors will gain access to a special chat channel as well as a means to easily register for duties and trials with new players.

As a mentor, you are expected to actively perform the following:

Provide gameplay advice for new adventurers and other players.
Be an exemplar for player etiquette.
Invite new adventurers to the Novice Network, and answer their queries in the chat channel.

Be an exemplar for player etiquette.

I've recently just started doing the DT normal raids. Every single time I sign up for the first time and enter I'll put forward the message about "Hi first time here hope it's ok if I tank" You know what happens? Every single time the other tank ISN'T a mentor they are more than happy to let me tank and learn. Whenever it's been a mentor they spam taunt and refuse to let me tank it.

Being an EXEMPLAR for player ETIQUETTE. Like come on. Is it so much to ask to allow a first timer to tank. As tank you only ever get the one time to tank a boss blind. After that you can never experience it again for that boss. You know what's coming where to go ect.

Also before anyone says anything. Whenever I tank with someone who is a first time tank I'll always let them tank it if they want to. Sometimes they don't and that's fine. But I will always give someone the chance to tank a boss blind since I understand the joy it can bring. But I guess for some mentors who are supposed to be paragons of this game when it comes to kindness and being helpful that's too much

Additionally if you're going to go around with the mentor tag you shouldn't be ignoring chat. That is literally part of the agreement you have. How can you help anyone if you're ignoring chat?

It costs people nothing to be kind seems like non mentors know that but some mentors have forget that.

Unfortunately, the reason this happens is because likely 90% (if not more) of the "mentors" you see are just people who are trying to get an achievement who have no interest in adhering to the idea or spirit of the "mentor" status. It works like this:

    - You get a special mentor roulette
    - If you do it 2000 times you get a pegasus mount

That's it. Almost every Mentor doesn't see sprouts playing content for the first time as an opportunity to teach and enrich others, growing the community and harboring good will by extension. Instead, they see sprouts as an obstacle they have to overcome to get their achievement mount. Your experiences will speak for themselves after you've made this realization. After they get the mount they almost always turn off their crown. At least this is what appears to be true after playing the game for so long and seeing it firsthand myself so many times. I know a single person who I could call a legitimate "mentor." The rest are just shoe-horning sprouts through content so they can get a mount. Back when I was new to the game the people who showed me the ropes and were the most helpful weren't even mentors. They were just people in my FC. Ironic.

Think those non-mentors likely had a passing interest to mentor, but didn't want the meme bad rep the burger king crown carries. I'm well well weeeeeell past the requirements for it, but that is true of me too.

Also as per above, you tie a reward to it and you're just going to get the folks doing quota time. As a newbie you're cutting into their precious wun and dun acheevo-chasing time by not knowing the entire game y'see, pls understand.

This is true, plus there are a lot of mentors who don't have the mentor crown on unless they're in the mentor roulette. Decent odds many of OP's co-tanks that happily let him tank were mentors, they just didn't have the crown showing. For whatever reason--I personally think the icon looks silly so I don't use it unless it's forced on me. Doesn't stop me from doing mentor things when the opportunity presents itself.

Honestly, I never want to MT if it's an option, and I'm always OT.

Are they using Provoke though? They might just have better gear and produce more enmity. It would have been nice for them to drop stance but are you sure they are actually spamming Provoke?

I've polled mentors and they don't seem to care nor expect to get the mount. Many of them did not even unlock mentor roulette, given it involves clearing things like Solemn Trinity when nobody cares for guildhests.

Ironically most of the ones farming mentor roulette who I see regularly stick around when people leave. But sometimes they have to make a realistic judgement about if the duty will be cleared ie. a sprout tank that ignores strats given in chat, in an extreme trial, and doesn't use provoke or shirk.

Most of them want to give it a better reputation and that is their motivation, or sprouts eventually became mentors and wanted to reciprocate the guidance they received in the novice network.

Some mentors hide the crown in duties and the world, but they technically have the status. And yes, it's possible to hide it.

Yeah, I've just set my status to normal online one, and ST isn't the one holding folks back, it's actually Voidcast Ex in PF. For example, I did ST in PF and I often will join future mentors parties too.

Most mentors aren't really mentors, they just have the shiny burger king crown because they met the requirements. Novice network is also a bad place. It's nothing special and somehow people treat it like some sort of entitlement ego.

the best mentor are the one that doesn't show the crown. I am a mentor and I refuse to join the NN because most the time it's the same thing. mentor complaining that there is to much button for hard or spoil other and when you take action they threaten you because you did wrong. so if someone ask for help i will help but I refuse to join NN haha

Here's my take from having the crown and doing the mentor runs on and off. Most times, I'm not really needed or wanted in the first place. There's been a few times where the fight is a struggle, but we get there. There are times when I too make mistakes, so I try to correct those to not make the run a slog for everyone else. I'm not really asked of to tell how a fight goes often. When I do want to give the time of day of how a fight goes, one of three things usually happen.

Someone else has a macro locked and loaded to throw in the chat.
The party doesn't stop to listen and goes into the fray so gotta get back in there or I look like a slacker for stopping to type.
The party gets divided and key roles start leaving so the run gradually dies.

At the end of the day, I view it more as signing myself to whatever fight the wheel lands on and help whoever is waiting on a role to be filled for a fun random adventure. Only times stuff got bad was when folks want to make it hard on everyone when help can be given but it's not accepted for one reason or another.

As for the Novice Network; I just wish it was a more helpful tool to throw a message in when a party is stuck and we're looking for a role that needs filling in a specific dungeon as the wait timer is dragging on past 20 minutes. Last I looked it was more closer to the largest chat room the game can offer with varying quality of whoever happens to be present.
