I agree that an untargeted slither, perhaps similar to Picto's Smudge or Dancers En Avante would be a lot better. Or perhaps something similar to ninja's Shukuchi?
It's really easy on controller, but the game (being terrible at teaching how its systems work) doesn't explain how to do this on controller properly. As an FC leader, for my orientation for new members, if they use controller I spend about an hour with them to help them set up their W-Cross hotbars properly, and explain the controls the game doesn't tell them about.

Pressing up or down on the D-Pad will cycle through your party list upward or downward, starting with targeting yourself. Holding down the left or right triggers and then using the shoulder buttons will target-cycle left or right within your field of view. This makes using Slither ridiculously easy, and you can practice on a dummy going back and forth between the dummy and a party member. It's very snappy to do.

My problem with it is, like with changing MNK's "shoulder tackle" to a teleport, it's an oGCD gap-closer that doesn't deal damage, so it isn't really used in combat as an oGCD for weaving purposes. That actually helped lots in SHB, having 3 charges of shoulder tackle, and felt good to use for weaving a bit of extra single-target damage. I'd prefer it if they changed it to some sort of stabbing thrust instead of just a warp-to-target move.
