And b4 you bring back the ''Knight = Paladin in JP'' I will say that the in-game sprite don't wear any helmet, despite other job like BLM and RDM having their Iconic hats, WHM it iconic hood and even ninja in that game got a helmet.
Since suddenly everyone now is fixated about design roots then why is dark knight running around with a greatsword? Shouldn’t dark knight have sword/spear for everyones beloved Cecil? In an mmo scenario shouldn’t dark knight be a dps instead of a tank?

As for the sprite argument, we’re talking 8bit NES game. It’s way too much easier to make a sprite with hat/mask than a helmet. Helmets started to take shape for sprites in FF3.

And WoL being most likely a warrior? A warrior with swords and shields? Not the Berserker from FF5? Now we conflicting the FF14 warrior aren’t we?.

Idk why we are even talking about design roots. It’s a simple request for a helmet for paladin which is extremely reasonable for a knight protector clad in metal. considering how 14 takes a wild ride with fashion yet for whatever reason there’s some folk rejecting the idea.
