Might need to fess up and realize that we're the old dogs now. Gaming has been trending towards more casual for well going on a decade and those who were playing just FFXI this entire time have pretty much only been moderately effected by it, in comparison to the huge sweeping changes that's hit the gaming culture in general.
Those who enjoy a tough challenge is in a minority, and therefore we need to recognize our position as a niche. It shouldn't be hard, we've ALWAYS been a niche audience. That hasn't change. Gaming however is popularizing and the games are changing to fit the larger audience. That means it's no longer an exclusive club just for us hardcore geeks.
Do you remember when we first encountered hard games? We whined and moaned and complained just like they did. (Oh GAWD Battle toads. And who here's beaten Contra without the Konami Code?). We need to step back and realize, hey, they're in the position now, that we were at as kids - and give a little patience when it comes their complaints.
We grew up when games where harder than this, but that doesn't mean their concerns are wrong or invalid. The market is flooded with people new to the gaming scene and have a completely different perspective on it than we do. If we're going to guide the new generation of gaming into prosperity, we need to prove as veterans that we can lead the community into a positive and inclusive environment, not a bicker like grumpy farm grannies about days gone by.
This air of continual resentment - this isn't what we as gamers desired when we were kids. We were fans feeling awkward that we couldn't share our excitement and have a conversation with the 'outside world' about our favorite hobby.
Now that our numbers as gamers are growing, we have to accept the fact that hey, we need to understand their views are different, and try to incorporate them as best as possible. Incidents like theses just show that they're not as involved as we are yet. We need to remember that our tolerance (and eventual apatite) for difficulty grew over time, and teach them that patience.
To the OP: Reassure your friends that the fight is worth it. Get them impassioned that this battle is one they will remember for a lifetime if they manage to get it together and win. Never before has a game gone through this much of a reform with this much at stake, and the fight here represents the climax of all of that. It's been a struggle for the developers to make it this far and to push through both heavy critisim and long work hours to produce both a present and a future we will grow to love?
What is a little struggle on our part to focus on video game a bit harder so we can look back on this event when it's ancient history and say "We came, we struggled, we triumphed!"
The developers can't take all the legwork in getting people motivated to play, not given how strong a mark they bear on their past failures. Help em out and tell your friends to give it another go. Push until you win and I guarantee you that you won't regret it.

EVERYONE WANTS A TROPHY!
to bad. It devalues the trophy for those that busted their asses to get it. If you want it, work for it. Don't expect everything to be handed to you just because you want it. Kids these days are a joke. I wanted to play ffxiv, so i worked, got money, and built a computer that could max it out. Now I can enjoy the graphics and storyline alike to the max. No one handed it to me, I worked for it. And similarly, I work for what I've accomplished in ffxiv. I don't want it handed to me. If you want it, earn it.

The fight isn't too hard by any stretch of the imagination. It would make Darnus a cheesy character if the fight were any easier.
I can understand people complaining about congestion, but if you can't handle that on the first day of the patch then you probably have issues with frustration in all aspects of your life.
I play Temple run while I wait.. like right now actually =)The fight isn't too hard by any stretch of the imagination. It would make Darnus a cheesy character if the fight were any easier.

That's their decision. if they aren't playing they are likely rusty.A lot of friends who are casuals came back to complete the storyline. After dealing with spending 10-30min just trying to enter a fight and wiping 10+ times to AOEs most have just left again. A couple have basically said they don't even want to try 2.0 because it will just be the same problems with a new world.
what 'problems' are they referring to?
right now the real big problems with the game are
1) UI (2.0 will fix)
2) lack of content (getting better, 2.0 will add more content. including PvP and new story)
3) latency (engine is getting an overhaul to help reduce load on servers)
so i really don't know what they are viewing as the problem. because it sounds to me like they are fine with the real problems to the game right now. so...good bye? see you again?
data or it didn't happen. those stats don't seem right. i didn't see anymore people shouting in Ul'dah than i normally do. i didn't see anymore people running around than i normally do. i think it's more like 10% only return for a week. 30% full time casual. 50% semi-hardcore. 10% hardcore.
I really believe most of the community is semi-hardcore.
That being said i don't think the fight is imbalanced. if anything there is unrealistic expectations by certain players who mainly play certain other games that i won't mention. there is a drastic jump in difficulty for story fights begining at the magitek vanguard fight. but even this fight is pretty easy and can be duo-ed by skilled 50s. I myself trio-ed it with my 50 mnk and a 44BLM and a 44 CNJ.
Rather than blame SE for the difficulty i think you and your friends should look at yourselves and decide what you want. some have decided the game isn't for them. so move on. live and let live.
From what i can tell the fight is balanced for a group of 45+In 2.0 I would understand fights being designed for hardcores or semi-hardcores. But for the ending of FFXIV which is supposed to let people finish up a story so they can transition to 2.0, this fight seems like its too much of a hassle.
That combined with "unable to proceed due to server congestion" is probably driving a lot of people away.
It also doesn't help that you get the same server lag as with ifrit, which is different for every individual. For example, the first few times i did the fight i got slammed with the beam attack even though i was behind the guy on my screen. I had to watch the minimap and move before he even appeared to avoid it.
Honestly I think that SE should just easy-mode the fight (cut difficulty by 50%?) so that people returning for a few days can finish up the storyline (even if they suck or only have af). If not, it will just make people more weary about 2.0.
Compared to In For Garuda Wakening which is balanced for a group of 40s this fight probably seems pretty daunting.
I agree with most of the people in the thread who are saying 'if they easy mode it, they aren't going to suddenly love the game' they are going to get bored again and just leave. if it's too easy there is nothing to work toward so you have no reason to try to get better and keep playing. if you won't want to work hard at the game, then well it's just not for you.
if you want to play causally you need to expect to miss out on a lot of content. casuals aren't the ones who continuously pay sub fees. it's the hardcore and semi-hardcores, because they will be the ones playing 4 or 5 years from now.

Fixed a couple things for you. I was very confused at first reading your post.there is a drastic jump in difficulty for story fights begining at the magitek vanguard fight. but even that fight is pretty easy and can be duo-ed by skilled 50s. Compared to In For Garuda Wakening (Easy Mode) which is balanced for a group of 40s this fight probably seems pretty daunting.
