It's almost like an entire expansion is usually enough time to form an opinion on a character."

I think the DT MSQ - and characters - are good, but it's just dragged out. You could cut down the cutscenes/dialogue by 50% and it'd be far better

or just... not make Wuk Lamat the center of every cutscene and dialogue and have the other npcs some time too. And we could have gone with Erenville or the others in some split scenes too. I loved Lyse, and I can't anymore with Wuk Lamat.

I would much prefer if they took 50% of Wuk Lamat's scenes and given them to Krile and Erenville...

You know, the two characters that were highly advertised as main characters in the promotional materials that stood in the background while Wuk Lamat preached about friendship and did her seasickness gag for the 11th time?

imho this is the biggest issue. What we have is okay, but in between the good story we have So much filler. It felt like 50-60% of this story could be removed and nothing would be lost

This. Wuk Lamat is a menace, but the story would still suck without her.

The entire back half of the MSQ is still a sloppily written mess that makes absolutely no sense if you think about it for more than a minute.

And the first half, while it has a good moment or two spread out amongst its 4 zones, is the same world building we get every expansion but with no real stakes and shallower writing. We met much more interesting cultures in Azim Steppe.

It's diverging so far from what an MMO is and should be. If I wanted to play FF7 I would... but I don't that sort of game doesn't excite me.

The biggest indication of this drift from MMO is how sparse the overworld is now. You don't even have to plan out a route to dodge stuff. Kill 10 rats has been replaced with find these 4 NPCs with 1 a little bit hidden.
