Step one, go to the tavern and pick up some leve quests. Its up to you if you want to level crafting gathering or fighting one at a time or all at once, and how many classes in those divisions (DoL DoH DoW DoM) you want to level at once. You will receive experience, gil, gear, food and materials as rewards.

I personally took botany and carpentry to 50 first, then worried about fighting classes later. I've never had any issues with gil, but I also never really got into the fun parts of this game until after my DoL and DoH were leveled up, resulting in me quitting a few times. Mind you the game back then is a lot different from the game of today. It all comes down to what you enjoy the most and what you want from this game.

Just for clarification, you can make money without having a DoL or DoH leveled, the downside to not having them is having to outsource for repairs and materials. At the end of the day it comes down to whether or not you would like committing genocide against a species or two for hours on end, or would you prefer hacking at trees for hours on end. (Just f.y.i. If you are a stoner, hacking at trees can be very amusing)

EDIT: Oh and one more helpful tidbit of info. If you go to your journal located in your main menu. At the bottom of every quest description there is a map button that shows you where exactly you need to go. This is the most important feature for questing. If you ever ask "where do I have to go for x quest?", the most likely response will be silence.
