Afterthe 7.0 update the launcher starts and I can log in successfully but when "Play" option is selected the launcher opens a black window and the game crashes/freezes.
First let me say my system is definitely a bit "fringy" configuration even by mainstream Linux standards. Also want to be clear that it is unsupported by Square Enix but FFXIV has worked flawlessly for the last 2 years. Before that it was running on Steam as a 'non-steam game using Proton for another 2 years. Version 6.55 was working perfectly using WINE and Lutris on June 24th before the update.
Since I use a custom version of WINE that includes most of the improvements steam has in Proton this solution might work for Steam Proton users too.
My current system, software (all 64bit);
GNU/Linux, Devuan 5 (Debian 12 fork)
Trinity Desktop Environment 14.0.1.0 (KDE 3.5 fork)
Glorious Eggroll's custom WINE package version 8.26 downloaded from Github with the default Lutris game launcher.
current hardware;
Intel Core i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz
Argus motherboard with 16GB RAM
nvidia GTX 1050, 3GB vRAM, using Linux driver ver. 525.147.05
After spending the 28th trying trying everything I could find to get the game to work after reading a post about how someone else solved the black screen issue back in 2022 by turning the Vulcan shaders on I had the idea of doing the reverse, I turned the DVDK option in Lutris's configuration menu, "runner options", OFF. Yes, despite all the comments saying to turn DVDK on, or update it, or use version such and such, I turned it off and almost fell out of my chair when the Dawntrail opening menu lite up the screen and music started playing LOUDLY in my headphones. (Forgot that the fresh install I was testing on didn't have the volume settings turned down like my original install.)
So, if you can log in successfully but are getting a black screen when you click "Play" followed by the game freezing/crashing try disabling Vulcan support. Worked for me, might work for you.
Hope this helps someone. Good luck.
