It would be a major life improvement if we could do this and still have our minions out.

Oh god please no.
Wings and capes are like herpes of mmos.
Wings and capes is and will always be tacky visual noise that just gets worse as the mmo goes on. Not to mention that no, birds do not flail their wings around 24/7. Most of the time they are neatly tucked close to their body.
Only if there's an option to hide other players wings.
One of the many reasons I left GW2 was because of the visual vomit it had become with wings and glow effects on characters. The game was aesthetically pleasing before all that. I really don't want FFXIV to become like GW2. x.x
So if it's always on, no thanks. If there's an option to turn them off on other characters, sure, have fun.
Especially with the way cape physic work in FFXIV, I don't think we need any more cape before CS3 knows how to implement cape physics properly.Only if there's an option to hide other players wings.

As for wing... well I kinda mixed on this one, on one hand it's can be a kinda cool addition to our mount/transport system.
On the hand, like you say, Limsa will filled with nothing but either an angelic or demonic wing.
Not to mention I highly doubt our walking/running/sprinting animation is fitting enough to have wings without look like a over-compensating clown-fest.
If anything, I prefer the second accessory slot to be shoulder item, something ranging from victorian/edwardian like shoulder cape to some light or heavy iron/metal shoulder plate.
As that would expand a lot more versertile glamour option as well.
I'll disagree, they just need to implement this better. Right now it's basically a "minion" that just sits on your back, and thus it does animate (many of these other games just have static wings, and games like Aion, and Archeage basically had de-facto flying without a mount as part of the game.) Like for example, I usually go around with the wings out 100% of the time, except:
- Clicking on an air current to attune, makes the wings disappear and the minion pop back out
- Riding a mount makes it disappear
- Riding in someone elses mount makes it disappear
- Falling down a cliff makes the wings spread but not not slow the fall (cause like, fall damage required.)
What should be happening is that anything on the players back, be it the wings or the backpack, should stay out unless otherwise it makes no sense to, like the car mounts and the chair mounts where it would clip straight through.
If a player has wings, or an umbrella, or anything else of the "parachute" type nature, falling off a cliff should just slow the players descent, but still "break the ankles" on the landing for the fall damage (the same should happen if a vehicle is unsummoned in mid-air, but right now it just makes it land.) You're being slowed down, not gliding.
What happens in some games is they implement "wings" as a "cloak" type item (same with capes) and thus it's not actually a functional gear item. We know Square Enix can make it a functional item, the auto-umbrella does this already. All they need to do is have a "cloak/backpack/wings" back item slot, and when this slot is filled, this item always appears on the character in the world, cutscenes, dungeons, on mounts, etc except when it would obstruct something important, and then the item would either fold inwards (eg wings would fold to behind the player character so you can see what is behind them) or disappear if it would clip into what is behind or beside them even folded.
As for the comments about birds. "Angel" wings and "Demon" wings are not animal wings. It's part of their silhouette. As such they are always "out". Actual birds do run around with their wings out and flap at humans and other animals to intimidate them, but generally they are folded because their wings are also their arms. You would not run around with your arms in T-pose because your arms would get tired.
I have this entire argument about "nonsense anatomy in mythological creatures", Angels and Demons fall under "where the heck do these wings actually attach, they're like extra arms, but everyone draws the wings attached to the spine or shoulder blades, which means the wings are not actually functional for flying." And if we get into the science of it, the wings would have to have a span 3 times longer than their height to actually carry the character. That is also never seen in any depiction of angelic wings or demon wings. In a fantasy game, you just go "it's magic" and leave it at that.

Deal: you get wings, I get Odin set with cape.
