Not too much recency bias for me, I finished Stormblood in NG+ like 20 days ago, and finished 5.3 in NG+ an hour before Dawntrail maintenance. Wuk really is awful.I'm not going to lie, I think a lot of the complaining has to do with nostalgic based regency bias than anything. Wuk seems fine. I'm just now wrapping up the city introduction but She isn't as bad as the complaints on these forums make it sound. She is like lyse in the sense she is naïve, But unlike lyse where we don't have a full expansions with her and still didn't have a clue about how anything works. Unlike lyse She seems pretty insecure. Her bravado in 6.55 was clearly a show of false confidence and a desperate bid for help.
I kind of feel she is lyse done well. The set up so far is basic and have a lot of tropes, but they can also develop in interesting ways. I am at least interested to see where this goes.
in 6.55 I was pretty sure i wasn't going to like her, But I am pleasantly surprised, Wuk has hints of depth that were never present for lyse until the very end of 4.0.

I thought it was like the perfect microcosm of what it was like playing this expansion. There's my WoL, sitting chilling while this character that most players do not like gets to do everything fun. The highlight of the first quarter of this expansion is basically getting to do all the things the WoL is doing in the trailer. Once that happens though RIP. Even if you do like Wuk Lamat that is fine, but please... we have a cast of characters in the near hundreds. Spread the love. I wanted to see more of Krile and Erenville with them as more of the focus than as side characters. I wanted to see more of the Viera in general, give my character some inspiration for a proper RP backstory by actually drawing from existing cultures and towns they control. And three expansions into this race being playable still nothing. Two entire continents and still can't throw us a bone. Hrothgar all over the place, Xaela get an entire steppe while Raen get underwater castles. Viera, nothing. Vii don't count, they aren't even on the same planet. The loloprits had more presence in the story as a living thriving culture than Viera, an actual playable race.
I don't remember babysitting Ameyric or Hien nearly this hard. At the end of their expansions I actually wanted to see more of them, this time I will be very content in never seeing Wuk Lamat ever again. Like her or hate her I'm just exhausted of her.
However with the noticable difference that Lyse was actually tied to the plot, there was a reason we were helping her, she was functionally a means to our ends, fighting the Garleans/Ascians. We have no purpose or agency here, we're a prop piece for this fan fic.
We're helping a fellow scion fulfil a life long dream and we get to explore a new continent, more than enough motivation for me. And yes I think us being a side character this time around is an aspect I particularly like. This way the story can stay more chill and we don't need to fight a world ending threat just to be adequate for the WoL's powerlevel.
Honestly the whole ordeal feels like a fever dream. I'm at the part after the second trial and at this point I do not care about any character at all other than our friends. (That does NOT include Wuk Lamat.)
Why are we even here?
In the first half of msq Wuk Lamat literally did not face any struggle, nor did she have any growth. Anyone disagrees with her she just "win" them over after some speech about talking and understanding. I'm okay with us being a mentoring character and just chilling in the background but we didn't do that either. We're forced to be Wuk Lamat's sudden best friend and cheerleader, we didn't do any mentoring. Unless you count standing there doing nothing and occasionally saying "you can do this wuk lamat the power of love can beat anything" as mentoring. Even counting the dynamis factors in this still does not make any sense. How did Wuk Lamat suddenly get stronger and defeat the two headed bully not so long after being kidnapped by the same comical bully?
And I am disgusted by how we're practically forced to call her Lamatiy, or however you spell that.
I play this game for the sole reason of how I love the world, the story, and all the friends we built along the way. In this expansion everyone was reduced to a pale shade of their former self. If you erased the name of all the dialogues you really can't tell who's talking at any given moment. The story tells you things, but leaves you with nothing to feel. We're told to like Wuk Lamat, when in reality that's not how you get people to like someone.
Never thought I'd feel so disappointed and betrayed by story in ff14 of all things.

Square Enix, no more Wuk Lamat please! I can feel the writers are purposely shoving her to our throats and forcing us to LIKE this annoying person
Finished Third Zone, the second half...the writing somehow got magically better to the point it was almost descent and Wuk Lamat wasn't cringe all the time.
However Wuk Lamat's massive power buff let me half amused and half annoyed at its ridiculousness. Even if you give a lot of leeway with dynamis, power of friendship and peace...It's WOL levels of power buff that has almost zero foundation behind except she was trained by the Dawnservant.
I'm almost enjoying the continuity of the side quests more than the MSQ in some ways.
Seeing the side characters you meet and meeting them in other zones and relating them somewhat to earlier quests is a descent reminder there is some sharp writing still and continuity.

Like, I cannot stress my love for FFXIV enough. The game helped me through a rough point in my life, and has influenced me greatly. It taught me I enjoy helping others and inspired me to undertake volunteer work in irl emergency services. I have and always will champion this game as one of the finest examples of its genre and an industry success story.
And this is why the last few days have been full of confusion and frustration for me, and any true fan of the game will tell you the same. It feels like this expansion was written by a completely different person compared to the previous ones. I could write paragraphs on my problems with the expansion so far, but most points boil down to Wuk Lamat.
