I seriously doubt you will have to keep paying your monthly subscription during the beta month (or however long it'll be). That would be madness. The only sensible thing would be to stop billing when the beta starts, then resume billing after your free v2 month is over. There is so much information on 2.0 right now I don't know where to begin, so Im going to ask and hope someone can answer or make an educated speculation:
Will our current characters be usable in beta? (I hear people say most likely no, but then this brings the question of... Do we have to pay the monthly fee then? Because we are playing beta characters that will most likely get wiped and replaced with our current characters.)
I love the game and have played and subscribed since day one, but I may temporarily stop my subscription during beta if it means I am paying to "test" a game, rather wait for the excitement of discovering on my permanent character.
Anyone have news???
Using your current characters during beta is obviously not going to be possible, both due to the database conversion process, and the fact that whatever items or quests you do in the beta test might be significantly changed in the final version, and because we might even get some corrupted character data, depending on how stable the servers are.
We are testing the stability and efficiency of their servers, after all. That means our characters are stored on potentially unstable servers. If we get data corruption during the beta process and were using our "real" characters, we might get in a situation where our character data became corrupted and unusable in v2. That's not something I would want to risk, and SE probably doesn't want to risk it either, considering it would be their support centers that would be flooded by desperate players who lost their alljobslv50 characters.

Cool, Thanks for all the info, It was helpful to see that most people felt or thought the same way I did.
(Now if a dev would post with information, considering we are one patch away from imminent beta doom.) /prod /prod
The official word on this is already out
1) we will not be able to use our characters for beta, we will need to make new ones
2) our characters will become available one month or so after beta begins, this is due to character transfering data to 2.0 format
no data will be lost, we just wont be able to use them at the start of BETA, and BETA will not carry over til 2.0 anyway

there's no point allowing us to use our character in beta. the point of beta is to test.
it may be useful for balancing high level content. but this is already established. it has not been stated they are changin any formulas (damage, enmity, etc.) so this is a bit moot.
re-rolling a character forces testers to use the new UI for this. this is important to test.
progress made in beta phase will not be 'saved.'
1) gives an unfair advantage to those who get in beta vs. those who don't
2)it's been stated in a couple interviews that players will not be allowed to play and make progress during beta (implies you must roll a new character if you are in beta because progress in beta is not saved)
3)force testers to see new UI for low level content. (which will be important for hooking new players, IE: important for success of game)
-------------
I'm assuming you've never been in a beta before.
it is 100% normal to wipe characters played in the beta phase. very very very rarely does a company allow you to keep a character you played during beta. If anything, you will get a cool little achievement or vanity something or other. SE is not likely to do this though. IE: what happens in beta stays in beta. any progress made during beta will be wiped. all progress made before beta will be saved and be again available at the launch of 2.0. the point of beta is to test the new UI and smooth things over and find any ground breaking bugs. (IE: i pull up a widget and try to teleport to a node. doing so causes the game to crash and display error:123123XAsdfa;lsomethingsomething.)
once the servers go down, subs will stop. it makes no sense to continue to pay. if you are in beta, you will not have to pay to test the game. that's just silly. it makes no sense to make your customers pay when you know servers will be down for months. again, that's just silly.
it's been stated there will be a 'trial' period once 2.0 goes live. this will draw in old players looking to check out the new interface. those of us who have already decided to play will likely get a free month. (we're going to be paying eventually anyway, so SE doesn't really lose anything by doing this)
http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/dow...Roadmap_EN.pdf
If you look at the roadmap, porting of data began back in march. the servers will go down in november(ish). it's been said that 2.0 will officially launch early next year. so that's 2-3 months of 'reboot' it will likely take at least a week or two to reboot the servers and do initial testing before they go 'live.' in debug mode to allow beta to truly begin. so we're looking at 1.5-2.5 months of actual beta testing. there may or may not be an open beta to stress test servers. (hasn't been stated.)
Is this newly corrected information related to the PC beta test or the PS3 beta test? And "this" is outdated. Latest presentation is Japan Expo and it says Winter 2012. And I don't see the information at Japan Expo being incorrect knowing that Yoshida was on stage and announced it himself.
Sept-Oct 2012:
Alpha test on our new servers
Winter 2012:
Beginning of beta test
(Oh yeah I speak French and that's a translation obviously the presentation was done in French).
Because i didnt read anything sayin neither.
I just find it odd, he claims they're still on track, yet havent bothered to update the time schedule on the pdf files.
Ya I would find it odd that 1.23 and 2.0 beta is 5 months when all other patches were so much closer together.
Pretty sure it's PS3 Beta which was always slated for winter and PC was right after Alpha testing which he said will last a short time.
yes sooo much info!~ that was a joke right? lol
But, no, our chars. Are not going to be used in beta. During the beta time they are going to be transfering our chars. to the new servers. We will be starting from scratch. Those beta chars. Will not be used in the final product either as far as I can understand.
No, we wont be paying for the game when these servers close, there will also be a free month after the beta.

If that's true then the pdf files are still valid in terms of the timeline.
Wich would be spanktastic, however....im not keeping my hopes up.
