instanced sure, but wow tells me that world PVP servers are a horrible idea and only exists for people who get off to the idea of ganking low level players over and over

The sort of pvp we have now was invented in response to open world pvp being the worst thing ever. Open world pvp is horrible. First there was nothing but open world pvp from like 2000 to 2010ish and it wasted the first decade of pvp. It's horrible and will always be horrible. Nobody has made a good open world pvp game. When somebody does, maybe SE can copy it. It will never happen.
Either people have no idea how bad open world pvp is, or they are trying to sabotage the game by always suggesting it. If you really don't know how bad it is, that dream you are chasing isn't real, nobody knows how to make a good open world pvp game. Frontlines are better than any big battle you will ever have in any comparable-to-FFXIV open world mmo pvp game. Crystalline Conflict is better than any small battle you will ever have in any comparable open world pvp game.
Open world pvp doesn't have to mean "big battles". Wow's open world pvp was great when blizzard didn't go out of its way to sabotage it, and when it didn't take the form of dozen of players trying to zerg one another. If your idea of open world pvp is a massive zerg fest (ala frontline, btw) then respectfully you have no idea what makes pvp good. It isn't about creating large scale spectacular events, and I think it's this misconception that makes large scale pvp (open world or instanced, it doesn't matter) fail. The sort of pvp we have now was invented in response to open world pvp being the worst thing ever. I know for a fact that world pvp can be great, because I had great world pvp experiences in wow.
RIP Viper 28/06/2024 - 04/07/2024. It was a fun almost one week

Open world PvP in FFXIV would have to be Very limited.
The examples I would look to from WoW that could be examples for limited implementations would be perhaps Gurubashi Arena, or the Dalaran Sewers. Both certainly had their flaws, but there was a lot of fun that came out of it, and it was completely optional content. A simple moshpit where any who enter are free to be fought, preferably with the caveat of light/full parties being disallowed to enter.
Imagine having the possibility to do a duel vs friends or strangers, anywhere but in sanctuaries...
imagine your FC organizing informal tournaments...that wouldnt have ANY repercusion, other than pure enjoyment and flashy battles shows around the world
A server with open PvP everywhere but not towns and an option on every server that you can challenge a player to a 1v1 duel everywhere would be really cool
I was thinking about this recently. I think it could totally work if it's just limited to a certain area of a zone. Say there's a forest zone but one section of it is a scarred battlefield. When you enter that area your hotbar swaps from PvE to the PvP kits and you're flagged for PvP. There could be different objectives in that area or maybe you could choose a faction from the surrounding area to fight for. They could get pretty creative with it.
I dont think this will ever happen, but a big area that has no timer and you can pvp there similiar to the map from Elder Scrolls Online would be cool.

if it leads to malicious bands of vets running around murdering sprouts and really anyone. no. no thank you.
i once played game where after baby levels it was open season. it was not fun; when i noticed that what i thought was fun was me actually trying to come up with remote enough farming spots and right combination hiding/vanishing/self-raising skills to do my peaceful s#it in peace--it didn't last much longer after that for me.
if you can opt out, then whatever. but not just in cities. whenever, wherever.
maybe they could put places like W'sD pier's dueling deck to other places. even there you need to ask before punching other's in the face.
ff14 is not exempt from becoming even more toxic than it already is

That's why they should create an extra server for it, where people can switch to it from the Lodestone and they should mark it as "PvP Server" so everyone knows and takes the risk
And maybe making a limit, like that max. 4 people can attack you and not more and would be a cool thing
Fighting in the air while being on a mount would be cool too, but it's probably not easy to add that
