With regard to multiverse shenanigans, I've always been a (very grumpy) proponent of the idea that authorities from both games should opt into the connection before a two-way connection is considered hard canon.

Hard agree, otherwise, we have to accept that Donald Duck is both a created character by the Disney Company, and also an actual person who helps save the multi..verse..? Because Kingdom Hearts is connected to Final Fantasy, and FF is connected to Nier.

I really wish Nier had been given the FF 13/15/etc “just for fun” treatment with a single trial kinda bit..cause whoooo-boy.

Sort of both? It's not really continuing his story in a meaningful way, it's more 'and then he just kept doing his thing until someone else took him down'. But... by all appearances, it IS the real guy.

Dissidia 1 had the actual heroes and villains summoned from their respective universes,

its actually even further complicated than that they are not the actual physical heroes themselves but are "memories" which were summoned from across the rift from all the many worlds and then those memories were shoved into whats called "mannequins" by Ex-death who accidentally discovered them when opening random gates an then told Chaos who was then convinced by Mateus that they would be good foot soldiers but it was much worse than that ofc because the memories slain by said mannequins were deemed forfeit by that very antagonistic dragon Shinryu lol
but basically Cosmos and Chaos' minions were considered "perfect" mannequins because they were embued with divine energy where as the other Mannequins are just soulless husks who mimic whatever figure they come in contact with. Cid of Lufenia replicated the same thing that cosmos had done an he created a special Mannequin which took on his former self which panicked Garland because he didn't want the perfect mannequins to know what they are lol and tried to dispose of him but prishe ruined his plan an then dragged the guy back to cosmos who then reached out to Cid who said that he was cool with it if he she wanted to make his copy self into a champion lmao
