I wouldn't recommend anything other than powerleveling until quest XP takes over in 2.0; even then, powerleveling may be faster

Since you're level 20 you just unlocked your class quest.
Also, do what grand company quests you can. Don't forget that you can do quests for all three until a certain point~
Go to Uldah and shout for a leve party.
Do sidequests and read the dialogue... immerse yourself in the world of Hydaelyn.
Go to the adventurer's guild and do a leve history evaluation! You'll get another leve that gives more rewards.
In fact, do the inn questline. Not only is Hildibrand freaking hilarious, but by the time you're done you might have some more leves to do.
Keeping doing this and work on your GC questline. Once you enter the Thousands Maws of Toto-rak, get parties for that instance dungeon until you get the gear you want - save your seals. You'll also get a lot of exp. Do that, leves, and whatever class/main scenario/grand company quests come up. Do that until lv30 where you can do your job quest.
Start working on your other class for the job you want and get to lv15.
Don't be afraid of powerleveling - this game doesn't have enough content yet to make leveling from 1-50 a varied, interesting and entertaining experience.

Lv 22 for GC
And you have still a bit of time to reach lv 30. The gobbue don't become unobtainable with 1.23, but with 1.23a
We would like to take a moment to inform you that the goobbue mount will become unobtainable upon the release of patch 1.23a.

Ah, lots of replies! Thanks for all the information guys. Good stuff all around. It seems we are very close to the GC quests, that's cool. I'm sure we'll easily get 30 before 1.23a gets patched in.
I also forgot about Behests, I will have to look out for those.
That's usually what everyone does who is not so lazy to get himself PL'd.
20 might be a bit early but I started joining grinding parties around that lvl as well and I met many people that way with who I still play today
Especially from lvl 30 onwards it's the fastest way of (non-PL) leveling and you both get the same amount of exp, too!^^
It's also less nervewrecking than in FFXI so you might want to give it a try.
Put yourself up in group search or build your own party by shouting in Ul'dah.
The monster locator might be useful to find a good leveling spot
Everything else was already said - GC quests, miniquests, Toto-Rak dungeon, main story quests, leves,..
If you enjoy open world content try the Shposhae dungeon near Limsa Lominsa (lvl15+), the monsters deeper inside are ~lvl 20 and drop keys for various chests with decent gear until you get some drops from Toto-Rak
Edit: Behests are still out there, but the reward in exp and Gil is so bad it's usually not worth your time. But if you are in a camp and it's about to start it doesn't hurt to join either.
my question is what lvl is your gf?
I have a secret to tell. From my electrical well. It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells. So the room must listen to me Filibuster vigilantly. A huge THANK YOU!!!! For FINALLY selling the Meteor Survivor Polo on the store. AND a huge thanks to my friend who bought it for me while he was at Fan Fest!!! YES I finally have my POLO!!!
With leve allowances it's not that long to go from 0-99 takes about 12-13 days. As for xp boost from completing a leve it's not really noticeble til the 30+ leves where you can get a nice chunk of xp for completing them. Honestly I'd say if you don't want to get the xp boost to get to far ahread of her you could do that following.
I think the following works, what you could do is this.
-Stare a leve using your leve charge.
-Abandon your leve being sure she if in said leve.
-Then join back in leve with her
-Complete leve killing mobs focusing more on xp chaining rather than the xp at the end(aka if you're ina leve where you have to uncover a mob kill all the mobs before finishing the leve)
-At the end of the leve you'll pretty much both get the same amount of xp and better yet you'll be able to do the leve again without having to head back to town by simply selecting -retry- on the leve card.
From the 20-30 path the xp is like:
From leve mobs=5-10k
From completing a leve=1k
So really the boost for completing a leve isn't as great as it is to take your time, beat the mobs and chain on them
From what I've noticed the leve mobs also seem weaker than the outside world mobs so chaining them is easier then chaining the outside mobs. Since you do have someone else playing with you, you can easily dispatch foes that are 3-6 lvs higher than you whatever you feel more comfortable with and get a nice chunk of xp from it.
take a break for a week lol

It's whatever though, we'll make do. I've actually enjoyed reading some of the quests we've done. Pretty interesting and comical. I think we'll just do some quests, grind some mobs here and there, do some leves, join a Behest or two, and explore the world.
@Neorei
Yeah, maybe we should. Ha.
