Dumb question but how long was the trip to Sharlyean?

I know this is mostly a why does it really matter type question, but how long do you think the trip to Sharlyean took from Limsa? As the last time we traveled by what I'm going to assume was also a 5 mast late 18th century Galleon; that had a secret modern-ish engine in its haul we were told going from Limsa to Kugane would take 2-3 months. Now Sharlyean is a whole lot closer so I doubt it would take months to reach it. I also find it hard to think that we waited a long period for the special adamantite to arrive as the ones that traveled by sea arrived on the same day as those that were flown in via the Prima Vista.

The only odd thing about said travel is I'm fairly certain the twins in all three ARR openings are shown to be fairly dazed and confused if not actually asleep.

It's not a stupid question, but you'll never get a satisfying answer. The only amount of time they've allowed to pass is when it came to the first. 100 years since the WoD went back, 5 years for Thancred, 3 for Y'shtola and Urianger, and then about a year for each of the twins with Alphinaud being there slightly longer. As far as the source goes, time passes, but no matter how much time has passed it's still somehow less than a year since ARR started. We're being heavily asked to suspend our disbelief when it comes to things like sea voyages. They address it once in Endwalker by saying they don't have time for a lengthy sea voyage to Thavnair so instead use experimental Aetherite travel, then just ignore it later.

The Three Great Continents: “Situated in Hydaelyn’s northern hemisphere and stretching from the polar region, almost to the equator, the Three Great Continents consist of Aldenard in the west, Ilsabard in the north and center, and Othard in the east. So great is the distance, that even the fastest of trader vessels carried by favorable winds require at least a fortnight to make the journey from Old Sharlayan to Vylbrand, and another two moons to travel from there to Doma.”

    i assume it's a lorebook entry

So about 16 days then since the game has an 8 day week and most agree that a regular fortnight in our world is 14days

But a "fortnight" doesn't mean "two weeks", it literally means "fourteen nights". People who have eight weeks to a day wouldn't shorten "sixteen nights" to "fortnight".

I think you need to ignore real world etymology being used in FFXIV or else you'll open up a whole can of worms.

We have Hollandaise sauce but no Holland for example.

    1) absolutely not a dumb question, but probably not one they want to give due to how janky the trip to Kugane made the timeline. Like you said, a “Fortnite” is kinda vague, just like “two moons” for Kugane (how long is the lunar cycle anyway? Does it coincide with the calendar month?)

    2) the better question, why do we (the scions in general) not have our own prima vista-esque airship!?

"Moons" are what they call months, in-universe. See: your character's nameday. (And yes, they're measured by the lunar cycle, which is 32 days, or "suns".)

Oh, good call! It has been a LONG time since I've seen the character creator.

On this particular matter I would disagree, because this world absolutely does have the number "fourteen" and it does have "nights". A fortnight should still be fourteen nights, even if weeks are eight days long.
