Support sure, but if they can't even update what is currently there. They will never do this.

What? Sorry I don’t understand what you mean with A-shaped skeleton.

Afaik, a new body type for races could be possible but not doable for SE.
One can imagine a new body type where normals are defined differently (more muscle tones variants for example) and another can imagine a brand new mesh type for the new body.
In either ways, this would mean to re do all the gear that shows portion of the body like chest pieces and legs.
The way an armour piece is made in FF is by merging the actual armour mesh with the actual portion of the body it has applied on (if there is).

Now, gears pieces have a material slot where all the textures of that gear are stored within and a material slot linked to the body material which takes the body textures, so technically speaking, adding a third slot material variant or a meta rule for a new body type which only its texture sets has been modified should not be a complex work to do, technically speaking, but since SE didn’t bother to add some holes and ears for viera’s hats I doubt they even had considered to think about new bodies…better adding three/four triangles on Layla’s faces…hilarious.

I was refering of using existing models with current head swaps, maybe that’s gotten lost in the discussion thread

Hi all, person with experience in 3D and how these character models work in XIV!

I totally think it is possible. First SE could update the normal maps, textures and MAYBE models already existing in XIV just like they did for this graphical update (It would take less time since bodies are easier and less time consuming than faces, hair or eyes to update).
Next they could implement a system that scales the different bones of your character (they already did for some of the female characters, IE "breast size"), but for everyone to a limit to not break animations. JUST being able to slightly change character's shoulder width, belly, chest size and glutes would beneficiate everyone.

They don't have to make more bodies from scratch, just update what they already have and extend character creator features already there to other parts with a cap limit to avoid breaking models.

After seeing the benchmark, it is really obvious THIS should be the next step because these characters models (not the faces) feel really dated indeed and these races, especially the ones sharing the "midlander body type" (IYKYK), need more variety.

I think what some people want is the kind of silly junk GW2 and PSO2 have. Game engines that use off the shelf (Eg Unreal, Cryengine, Source Engine) end up limited to the engine's modeling limits, which is why you see the same body types over and over again in many MMO games.

Meanwhile PSO2 has some incredibly silly things you can do, but even then the body style is still pretty limited. GW2 (I didn't play it much, but I distinctly remember it having unbounded magnets, so you could scale down to 1' tall to 10' tall and the limbs and such would stretch accordingly.) Yet nearly everything built using CryEngine and Unreal adheres to the same scale. So every female character looks exactly the same from the neck down. Every male character, same from the neck down.

FFXIV, with the unique race types and walking gait's that go with them, really should have the ability to mix-and-match the body types with the heads, but also the thickness of certain limbs, chest sizes, etc aren't an inherent limitation imposed by the engine, rather that the underlying base model used for the gear. So if you suddenly unbound the magnets, then you have to make sure every piece of gear has that same unbounded magnet settings. For a female character, when the base model actually has some level of bustiness, you can't just "invert the chest" to make it flat, nor can you make joke anime chest sizes, for the same reason. They would need to change every piece of gear to not break. I just don't see much happening in this regard unless they were going to make a one-size-fits-all-races-and-genders gear, and we all know how poorly that works.

Realistically, I see it being more possible to make characters more buff/thick. The game Mabinogi, actually had this as a feature. How it worked in that game, is one type of food would increase the magnet limits on the legs, one would for the entire upper (chest, arms), and one would increase both (making the character "fatter") so if you ate only the food that increased the upper body, eventually the shoulders would be wider than the hips. If you ate only the food that increased the legs, they would get a kind of bottom-heavy shape. But this game didn't have magnets for chest sizes or anything, this was the absolute limit of what you could do because the game also scaled the character as it aged. So everyone of one race and gender had the same height.

Applying that to FFXIV I don't see as being entirely unreasonable, but it might result in unsatisfactory results where the clothing seams meet between the gear parts.

GW2 does offer a limited selection of body types (which can be customized in the manner you described), although I think humans were the only ones with much diversity, iirc (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong lol). Ranged from thin, to soft, to beefy, with different diffuse maps to suggest tone.

I'm still baffled we didn't get a new character creator with the update.

Short time ago I realized that if you play a female character you can choose from almost every bodytype, appearance type and
    temperament (emotes/voices).
From really short and slim, to various options from tall and muscular to tall but still very feminine. With very different styles.
But as a male you don't have that variety.

For example there is no option to play a really small slim male character. Smallest is Miqote, but still not really small like for example female Au'Ra.
And their body type is not really 'slim'. There are tons of muscular and big size options for males. If you want a more slim body the only
option is Viera. But they are not small.

I would love to see more variety for male characters. For example a smaller und less muscular option for Hyr and Au'Ra with more elegant emotes (and fitting voices)

    PS: Lalas excluded
But I love all of them!
