It's their culture and is a toxic part of it. It is literally that it is more important to serve one's societal expectations than fulfilling the purpose of those expectations.
This translates to, it is more important to arbitrarily fill an unfun role than it is to make the role fun. You have a societal obligation to heal whether you like it or not and also you are looked down on as being unimportant at the same time. If you dare speak up you shame yourself for going against social order.
