Why? Because reasons? Given that AF sets changing appearance based on gender is a trend that goes all the way back to ARR, why are you or anyone surprised/disappointed by this?

It is quite simple, really. The dev team are under no restrictions that prevent them from designing gear specific for males and females, or race as they see fit. Even if they did state that they would no longer lock gear behind gender, that does not apply in this case as the gear isn't technically gender locked. Understand that you or anyone who has a problem with this, that problem belongs to the person complaining. Not the game or the dev team.

I already know the argument of pig suits, tanking in a bikini, bunnies, and silliness are well on their way. Save them until I can grab my violin.

They've been actively removing gender-locked gear in recent patches and making it accessible to everyone, look in the patch notes and it's right there. The annoyance comes from the differences only being for select classes. The fact that the crop-top picto look is the one they've been advertising since the job was revealed has only led to people feeling misled when the entire identity of the job seemed to be intentionally messy and mismatched (the undershirt breaks that flow). WAR gets a crop top for both genders, so the difference here is redundant and unnecessary. Just screams that women need to show skin and men can't, so it sends a bad message both ways :P

As a DNC, I will continue to wear the same glam I created in Shadowbringers, I guess. That DNC AF gear is ugly. I've legit used the Tribal Warg Sarouel of Aiming for years. It just feels casual DNC for me and they've yet to release anything remotely close since.

If we're talking about artifact gear, it should be a realistic option for everyone, not favouring certain tastes gender-wise - design-wise is a different matter, of course. The former being more tricky than the latter, unfortunately.
But mic drop statements like these don't really help in a discussion where both sides should be taken into consideration. There's a not so novel concept of beneficial communication skills, to play your unnecessarily passive-aggressive comment back at you.

It is a realistic option for everyone. Not everyone will enjoy every piece of gear, and that’s ok. That’s why there are many different sets in the game.

By not having the gear be the same across genders, the dev team is actively robbing people of choices. Let people wear what they want to wear.

Anyways, I have recently experienced the joy of dressing up my catboy in skirts and I LOVE feminine gear for him. He is flamboyant in style and I would have appreciated if I was given the option to put him in a croptop as I pick up PIC. I'm pretty disappointed that I will not have the option to do that.

side note: people who espouse rigid gender roles as being very important have probably never seen a bird before. We do not need a rigid gendered dress code in this game. Let men be flamboyant and show skin if they want to.

That's not the same as stating outright that they will no longer lock gear behind gender. Because they have made efforts to unlock/not lock gear behind gender does not prohibit them from doing it whenever they decide to make gear have an exclusive appearance in the future.

There is no bad message being sent. Only a false expectation being created based on non-existent principles that the dev team does not have to abide to.
