Why do players need to be able to collect every single item? They're never going to use most of them, or only use them until something better comes along to replace them, at which point they can get rid of the previous item.

I'm familiar with WoW's transmogrification so I understand the convenience of the on-off flag. But there's also no need to keep the actual item as gear is quickly replaced on a character and there's no reason to equip lower level gear once you've got an upgrade. Here there is reason because we can do every job on every character. The glamour dresser is helpful storage for those still working on leveling old jobs. Changing to the flag toggle system means the players would have to farm a lot of that lower level gear over and over as it became needed for the next job because they would run out of room in inventory.

Better inventory management would solve most player problems. Don't keep something because you might want to use it in the future (unless it's something very rare and hard to get). Keep something because you will use it now or in the next couple of weeks. You can go back to farm the item later if you decide later that you are ready to use it.
The whole point of my post on the Glamour system is that there really isn't a point in needing to retain the item in FFXIV either, other than the fact that the system design is incredibly poor. The argument of "better inventory management" (ie delete the item and then just spend additional time later and go refarm it again if you want to glamour it) is incredibly dismissive of the player bases' time.
