Wow, 14 pages of useless arguments and a simple solution is obvious:
    1. Open world PvP (optional in towns and other crowded places)
    2. Only if both players agree to!
    3. Ability to port to PvP arena at any time (for privacy or avoiding crowded places like towns etc.)
    4. Ability to /ignorePvP - to avoid PvP request spamers.
    5. Ability to /hideduels - makes duelists invisible to you, if there are bunch of them in a crowded place ruining your FPS.

Few simple things to make everyone happy. If both the duelists and the players around them have an option to avoid each other with a press of a button, what can they complain about?

Well...as I said above I don't think that is the case for everyone...just some. I say this because I used to be that way myself lol. >.> Before I actually tried PVP I would say it sucks because I was afraid I would be horrible at it.

After trying it I discovered I was actually pretty good at it (not bragging at all sorry I just don't know how else to word it) so I stopped saying that after trying it and actually enjoying it. I know a lot of people who were the same way...well, they tried it...didn't do too good, and said it sucks. Again, I never said everyone haha...there will always be different reasons for everyone

I'm going to be honest. I've never done pvp. Why because it doesn't interest me enough to go oh my god I have to go do this. I'm honestly playing this game for the storyline it had as well as the ls I'm in and still hoping Thancred dies... but that's another story....

I myself am not fond of pvp so I won't be doing it so why should I have to automatically set something to auto decline when I just want to play a game and have fun?
But that's like saying cars shouldn't be allowed to drive because you don't want to have to worry about them while riding your bike.

Why should one group of players suffer because you're too lazy to type a /text command?

PvP is great for adding replay value if done right. Adding that element of unpredictability can keep you coming back for a good while, and really helps fill those periods where you're grinding if only to have something to do rather than wanting to accomplish anything. Most people I've spoken to who are fans of that kind of competition have said they felt similar before really trying it out, regardless of what game they were playing at the time. So I'd at least give it a fair shot. You might end up liking it.

guess what. you have the honor of being terrible at it along with everyone else in the game a the same time

nobody is going to know what to do, other than apply pvm skills to pvp, at first. we'll all be noobs in XIV pvp when it comes out. it's all a matter of putting yourself out there to look a little silly at first, in return for a whole new epic journey in your gaming goals. hopefully making new friends and having a lot of fun while learning with the rest of us.

some people are so afraid of looking silly, they avoid anything with a risk attached to it. this applies to real life, and games as well, we're all just people with faults. Most of us looking forward to pvp, have pushed thru that fear at some time or another, and know what the rewards can be on the other side. we just want to share it with the rest of you.

it's no fun unless there's others to play with, so I'm hoping that the people opposed to it, might take an open mind at some point, and give it a try.

pvp/duels will never be everything that's important in the game, it's just another element to make the game more dynamic, and exciting.

Well maybe again I'll try it. I'm not afraid of doing PvP it's more of meh I want to play the story for the story itself. Hell even if I've never done pvp i might even be a natural at it . Jk though in theory and concept it shouldn't be too hard to do except for mage classes where they may just get pwned and or have to work harder at getting a victory. Like I said I'm against the open dueling but if there's restrictions put on it to where say lvl 50 Johnny doesn't go and "assrape" lvl 1 Jim because Johnny's a douche and has an inferiority complex and thinks beating lvl 1 players makes him superior. Or even getting harassed by people because you declined said duel invite and then they get their ass-hat friends to join in on it. That is what will put a damper on it and get se to say uhhh this ain't working guys and take it away... (trust me I'm not being pessimistic on it, I just know that unfortunately that's how some of us "humans" behave and try to give a realistic view on it).

And I know you guys keep saying stuff about Auto decline but if they spam you enough even with auto decline on some people will still get pissy about it >.<. Le sigh sometimes... I just wish we could all think alike then it would be easier for everyone to get along with but in a way I'm glad we're not because that would just be too damn creepy LOL

(by the way I try to be very open minded about things just sometimes *shrugs* everyone has different things that excite them)

as someone else mentioned, the great thing about pvp in this game, will be that anyone can play any class/job. it doesn't take a lifetime to level a new one, or create special setups just for pvp. so in theory, everyone should have an equal chance at being "OP" and being the underdog.

I hate to get into this part of it, but it's difficult for any game to exclude the rock, paper, scissors aspect of 1v1 pvp. there's always some class that will be great at beating whatever your playing. what I'm looking forward to are the same job duels, and supporting a party in open/arena combat.
