Honestly, PvP was always done right in FF11. There was variety and usefulness outside of the different arena's without the pvp having an adverse reaction in the community or game. If WoWtards and other gankers get stuff like duels and other idiot open world pvp in FF14, it will have a hugely negative effect on the community and the game itself.

I think Pankration was amazingly interesting PvP. I would love love love to see an even deeper version of it in FF14. But what I meant by usefulness above is that you got points for beating other pcs/npcs in Pankration with your pokemon, as well as leveling up ur pokemon. Those points could then be used to buy things, one such thing was items to pop monsters in the open world.

Just some really amazing things in FF11 that they could be using as inspiration, with even more effort and depth and people would flock to FF14.... but instead we'll get mo fo duels.... God FML
