I'm not sure those are artificial. The strongest highlight on my character's eye changes shape when it hits the edge of his cornea. If it's artificial, they've done a very good job of remodeling the eyes so it reflects differently on the cornea surface vs. cornea edge vs. sclera.

I do think some of the pupils look lighter than maybe they should.

(I can't stop rotating my character by increments in the new chargen and admiring the eye reflections.)

It's artificial in the sense that there is a hidden light placed in front of your face that lights the eye a bit.

Or the old one which was a painted on dot that moved a bit with the camera. (Might still be the case).

Still, having that light is tantamount to ensuring our character doesn't look like someone who kicks puppies.

I can understand if it's a "hidden light". That's necessary. Eyes are so incredibly reflective naturally, and FFXIV isn't going to go so far as ray tracing to bounce light around enough to mimic that. In any case, at least on my end it's an improvement over the live game painted dot and the 'WoL is looking out at an expanse of reflective ocean and none of it reaches his eyes' that Original Flavor DT benchmark suffered from.
