Character /still/ moving after hitting Enter key on PC

Creating a new thread as requested, the previous thread is here https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/491200

To sum up, what happens is from time to time after I have finished typing something in the chat window, when I hit "enter" my character will just start running in a direction. Usually to the right, but I have seen to the left and to the south/down as well, but to the right seems to be the predominant direction. It does not happen every time I hit enter, sometimes I can go several dozen "enters" with no issue. Sometimes it will do it 2-3 times in a row.

This appears to have started around the 6.3 patch, but I cannot say with certainty. I only started noticing it around the 6.5 or 6.55, prior to that I had been on a break from actively playing (I'd get on to do cactpot and fashion report from time to time) since about the 6.45 patch, and I mostly actively played on my Steam Deck before that anyway.

All keybinds are default, "enter" is not set to any movement or autorun keybind, and I am not running anything like auto-hotkey that might rebind enter to something the game might interpret as movement input.

A few more data points I have observed over the last couple of months:
    1. I am able to "reset" the bug by clicking out of the game window, that will stop the movement, at least until the next time the bug is triggered.
    2. I can "pause" it by hitting enter again to refocus on the chat window, but as soon as I cancel that or select something else my character goes back to running.
    3. If I use either WASD or the controller to move in the opposite direction, my character comes to a full stop while I'm holding the opposite direction, but will begin moving again as soon as I release the input.
    4. If I manually hit the autorun keybind (either "R" or L1+LStick Up) while the character is running on it's own, it will begin running in circles (a combination of forward from autorun keybind plus whichever direction it was already running in.) So this does not appear to be related to the autorun keybind.
    5. This only happens on my Windows laptop. It does not happen on my Steam Deck nor my Linux desktop.
    6. I play on all systems with a controller and using the controller UI. I still have not tested if this happens in the keyboard & mouse UI. *Edit: Tested, same results regardless which UI is active.
    7. Specific type of controller appears not to be an issue, on the Steam Deck it is the Deck itself. On my desktop it is a Steam Controller. And on the laptop it is sometimes an 8BitDo Pro 2, sometimes a Steam Controller and sometimes a Dualshock 4.
    8. The laptop has an RTX 2070 Max Q GPU, unlike the previous thread where the OP had an AMD GPU, so it does not appear to be an AMD issue, nor an AMD-on-Windows issue, considering both the Steam Deck and my desktop are all AMD.

Clearly this is not a widespread issue, so I don't know how else to go about troubleshooting steps that I haven't already exhausted (except for trying it on the same machine using keyboard and mouse UI which I will eventually try, I just tend to avoid playing on the laptop due to this weird bug.)

Do you have tried, to completely physically disconnect the controller? It maybe be the source of the unwanted movement.

If you are using a wireless keyboard try updating its driver. Had the same issue in game and that fixed it for me. May also work with built in keyboard as well.

Good morning! Thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

We apologize for any inconvenience you have been experiencing. There are a number of situations that can cause the error you are describing. Please try the following troubleshooting methods in order to resolve the issue:

    - Please make sure that the gamepad setting is enabled: System Configuration > Gamepad Settings > "Enable gamepad."
    - Try plugging the controller into different ports (both front and back).
    - Make sure all drivers for the controller are fully up to date, even if the device is new often the drivers are not updated while it is in storage. Most times, the controller will work without them in a "plug and play" style, but for an issue like this, we must recommend that you install the official drivers for the controller.
    - Hide DS4 controller, please try enabling/disabling this option.
    - Disable all other device drivers, leaving the mouse, keyboard, and controller as the only active devices.
    - Try unplugging all other devices and only plugging in the mouse, keyboard, and controller.
    - Make sure Windows has been fully updated from the Microsoft/Windows Update website.
    - Re-calibrate the controller under the System Configuration Menu under the Gamepad Settings tab.
    - Delete all USB and gamepad devices via the Device Manager. Restart your computer and allow the device to rediscover the devices and reinstall the drives.
    - Fully uninstall the controller, reboot the computer, and reinstall the controller.
    - If you have a specialized gaming keyboard you may want to try using a different keyboard to be sure there are no conflicts with that device.
    - Launch FINAL FANTASY XIV preferably with a cleanboot. To open a cleanboot, please open the Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) and select the "Start Up" tab. Disable every nonessential program here, and restart the computer.
    - If possible, please try using other controllers.

Should the issue still persist after attempting all the listed troubleshooting, we advise that you reinstall the game (make sure to remove or rename the 'Final Fantasy XIV' folder in the 'My Documents' > 'My Games' folder). You can re-download the game client via the Steam library or at the following link for the Windows client: http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/playersdownload/na

We recommend that the game be installed on the C: drive, as installing it on any drive that is not the default may cause more problems.

If you are still running into this issue after the provided steps please provide us with the following:

Steps taken before this issue occurs:
Does this only happen with Final Fantasy XIV?
Does this issue occur for all characters?
Are the Controllers 1st party (Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo) or 3rd party (Off-Brand)?

Thank you for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums!

I meant to post an update last weekend but never got around to it...

Yeah, I have tried that, even with a controller completely disconnected it happens occasionally.

Haven't tried typing with the built in keyboard to see if it does the same thing. I'll give that a shot. But the keyboard I have been using is a wired one.

The 8BitDo and DualShock 4 are connected via Bluetooth, and the Steam controller is using it's wireless dongle (which is a kind of bt, if I remember right). I have tried different ports for the Steam Controller dongle to no discernible difference in behavior.

    - All drivers are up to date
    - Windows is up to date, in fact it just updated again earlier this week.
    - Disabling all other devices would prevent me from being able to log on (no network adapter), but I have made sure that only the keyboard, mouse and controller are connected to the laptop (no external drives, monitors, printers, etc.)
    - Have recalibrated the controller, it's not phantom inputs from joystick drift, the movement that's happening is at full speed as if holding the joystick fully in a direction or holding one of the WASD keys down. It's also not always happening like drift would after a while, and it happens even if the controller is off/disconnected.
    - It's a generic keyboard, Microsoft Natural Ergonomic.
    - I keep my Windows startup to a minimum and only launch programs when they're needed.
    - As said in the original post, I have tried other controllers. 8BitDo Pro 2, Dualshock 4, and Steam Controller. So two first parties (Valve, Sony) and a 3rd party (8BitDo)

Yes, this occurs on all characters, and as far as I can tell it only happens on FFXIV. The only other game I've played recently on this laptop has been Baldur's Gate 3 which doesn't have an in-game chat, but I do use a mod to enable WASD movement so the keyboard is used often.

I can say with certainty though that there are no other times I've seen any keys get "stuck" in non-game related scenarios like typing an email or document. Everything works as expected.

Some more data points since the initial post:
    1. It seemed to have resolved when I changed from Fullscreen mode to Borderless Windowed mode, but after an hour or so it started happening again and now it's back to regularly but not always happening, just as it was before.
    2. I did finally test it in the keyboard & mouse UI, instead of the controller UI, and had the same result, so it's definitely not a bug exclusive to the controller UI.

One thing that I have not done yet, and I'm genuinely considering because Windows 11 has been such a pain in my derriere, is to either wipe the system and reload with Windows 10, or just put Linux on it like my Desktop and Steam Deck.

I'm hesitant to put Win10 on since it will be end of life next year and I'll be right back here again. But this is also my work laptop (self employed) and there are programs I use that don't work on Linux, even with Wine. So I'd either have to deal with Windows in a virtual machine, or dual boot, for those programs. At this point that's seeming like the best option though, for the long term.
