What confuses me is the comment on Crysta. I figured the purchase of Crysta would be affected, but it sounds like amount of crysta needed for a subscription is going to increase which makes 0 sense.

It depends on how it's classified. Gift cards aren't taxed on purchase, because it's money. Crysta acts as money.
So the purchases via Crysta would be taxed, so an increase in Crysta costs.
They need to get on the Visa debit issues there is no need of it taking over a month to "look into" when it should have only taken a few days at most. The sales tax thing I'm surprised they haven't done years ago considering digital sales on every other site and game has implemented sales taxes starting a few years ago.
That is when the true Vana'diel of legend will be reborn.
For non-resident Canadians being charged GST/HST, look up GST189 General Application for GST/HST Rebates. For PST, it will depend on the province SE is billing you in. CRA guidance is to ask for a refund for taxes collected in error first, though.
EDIT:
Maybe there's a chance SE ignores Canadian taxes?

Unfortunately, this isn't something Square can do a great deal with in expediting. The issue lies with the payment processor, so if they're content to drag their feet, then Square can do little but just continue complaining and deal with it in the meantime. Especially so if Square has signed some sort of contract with them. If Square could have solved it insanely fast by now, they would have. Very few companies are going to leave money sitting on the table so blatantly. They need to get on the Visa debit issues there is no need of it taking over a month to "look into" when it should have only taken a few days at most. Dealing with payment processors can be a huge headache due to immense amounts of red tape everywhere.
The payment processor they had before was fine and now people are stuck waiting over a month while the new payment processor has been taking there time fixing the issues. Square could be getting on them much more and putting more pressure on them to fix it then just sitting around waiting for answers. Square is partly at fault for waiting over a week to notify the payment processor and not getting on them and putting more pressure to get it fixed immediately and the payment processor is also at fault for screwing up one of the more used payment methods worldwide. They need to put more pressure and get them to fix the payment issues or find a way to back out of the contract and find a more reliable payment processor.Unfortunately, this isn't something Square can do a great deal with in expediting. Hi, I want to give my concern about this topic. For the last month I have seen many times this topic and how it has affected people many times when playing the game or paying it.
I understand this changes are coming for North America servers and players, and is obvious this are legal regulations for NA players. However, I feel this is going to affect multiple users in this case as well. For example there are many players from the American contintent that are not just from North America that already are affected by all this changes and plays the game. We need for SE to address the concern that is necessary to increase the number of countries that can pay the game to play it, and also if this is going to be a regulation on the billing system of NA that this may affect players from the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. For this may not allow us players to continue using our accounts and billing informations to play the game. I for example use the address of a family member that lives on the United States to be able to pay and play the game. If they are going to do this changes they need to consider players from other countries inside the America continent, not just North America that will suffer the consequences of this by affecting them on playing the game. MAking necessary for SE to create more servers and account services for other countries as well. Thank you for your attention
First of all stop complaining, the other option is the rise raise the subscription fees by 2-3 dollars or the likes.
They do need to give some sort of update on the Visa debit issue. That said, state and local taxes and the regulations regarding them are not under SE's control. These are requirements all vendors are starting to have placed on them.
