    Is crafting still worthwhile?

For a new expansion, is over-melding still a thing and useful for raiding?

Been a while since I cared about crafting (Since heavensward).

If not, what is the main purpose of crafting in this game outside of house decorations and a few consumables and self repair for armor?

Before every tier theres a crafted set that is the Bis for progging the fight, you want this crafted at high quality and pentamelded. This is where you make the big money on crafters, especially at the start of a new expansion.
Crafters also need their own pentamelded gear, which in-turn can lead to more gil.
And of course, potions and raidfood are needed as well.

Crafting can definately land you big money in this game but its kinda dependent on where we are in the update cycle. Ususally at the begining of new exapnsions or raid tiers is when you can make big money. Hell I made my first 30m gil just selling crafter's materia at the start of Pandaemonium

Pentamelded crafted gear is generally the best you can get outside of the weekly limited Tomestones and Savage drops whenever a new tier drops into the game, so people will buy them for quite a bit of gil if you can manage to put them together early enough.

Yes, crafted gear, pots, and food are all still highly desired for raiding. And depending on what's popular some furniture can be good money makers. Crafting is essential to the game.

As can glamour gear, especially if you can figure out what's needed for the Fashion Report before the Friday announcement.

Yep glamour is always something that is highly in demand, both for Fashion Report and just general glams.

But yes, OP, unlike other MMOs that let it fall to the wayside, XIV has done a good job of keeping crafting products relevant and desired.

    - Crafting can "make" good money if you're very diligent about it. And by that I mean you max level ASAP when an expansion hit, and put in some investment to BiS out you gears BEFORE each raid tier drop. Then on patch day, you'll use the first 24-48h to grind out material to craft the latest set to sale. If you're willing to do that then yes you'll be making bank. The reason I say this is depending on the server, the competition can be very ruthless and the price will often drop very fast. My server (Gilgamesh) will often see a large price drop after 3 days, and the price would fall off a cliff a week after patch day. That's not saying you can't still make money afterward (people still play alt and such) but the amount may be no longer worthy of the time investment. I often find it's better to just sell the tome mat I have rather than turning them into gears.

    - But, another angle to this is they money you make is just not the money you earn, but also the money you save. I'm an altholic, not only I play multiple jobs on a char, I also play multiple chars. Like I said I no longer really craft stuff to sale, but I know I'm saving tone of money by doing all the gearing myself instead of having to buy them.

That's only if you try to jump out there and compete with everyone on new items. Take some time to find niche items in demand and you can do well for yourself crafting.

That's the thing, doing those kind of thing is what I meant by diligent, I provided an example and yours is just another. What they both have in common is .... as you said, it takes time to do. So it comes down to how you weight your playing time relatively. Like ... don't get me wrong, even after the first week you can still sell the new set for like 100k+ a piece on Gilgamesh, and that's probably still a worthwhile amount to a lot of players, especially if they're new. But as someone who had played a long times, the 500k-1mil a piece price point during the first week is considered worth my time, 100k ... not so much. Neither I think it's worth my time to try to find the "niches" to make money. I would rather use my limited game time to pursuit other activities rather than making money.

And please don't take the above as "bragging", I'm not really rich. I'm pretty sure most people with the same playing time as me probably would have 10x time more money than me at least if they diligent about making money. The reason I feel I don't need to make a lot of money anymore is simply I don't think I'll ever need them for anything. The catch 22 of crafting is you max it out to make money ... but because you max it out, you no longer have any need to spend that money. So like I said it simply became a self-sufficient tool.

Crafting can make good money if you gather all your materials and craft food/potions/glams/housing items when they first release especially during the first week of raid tiers.
