Nothing to do with "competition". It's called "player expression". A term that is alien to anyone who joined after 2018 and who never played any of the hundreds of video games where character rosters, abilities and builds exist. Being able to defeat an enemy or a boss more than 1 way without doing any exploit is a welcome flexibility that doesn't take ANYTHING away from people who don't care about that level of expression.
This exists in many games, even offline FFs, and is part of why those games feel fun to play.

Literally what does that have to do with my comment

My comment was about player choice about encounter design based on job design. What does that have to do with competition

Sakurai posted yet another video that could be applied to FFXIV today as well.

Without reading all 17 pages of this: as a Tank main I honestly miss things like aggro management, trash packs in dungeosn beeing a threat, and multiple gcd combos for tanks.

I honestly don't feel like the dungeon trash was ever actually threatening aside from certain gimmick/miniboss pulls. It only felt more dangerous due to relative lack of mitigation/healing cooldowns at the lower levels.

Criterion shows that they can make interesting/dangerous trash packs if they feel like it, but they seem to think it's too much for the casual playerbase or something.

The combat system is deceptively complex and demands perfect execution and optimization in order to compensate for mistakes that happen elsewhere, with harder fights having less room for that.

Damage optimization while doing raid mechanics and coordinating with party is where the challenge is, not the individual aspect of your character.

    Bomb Logic, not Sword Logic.
The problem is that Encounter Design does has way less 'shelf life' than job design because of how XIV structure is:

    - Focus on the encounters: They are complex and engaging until you get your clear and suddenly they are braindead as long as everyone is on the same page. What remains is a bunch of boring jobs to go through those reclears until you don't need to reclear them anymore. Add to the aggravation the small quantity of High End content you're offered every major patch.

    - Focus on the jobs: They are complex and engaging, and at some point you master their mechanics, but you still need to be on your toes and be doing decision making constantly. Shelf life is bigger because you need to apply that to different encounters, which lead to different variables. This is exactly why today BLM is the job with the most shelf life imo.

In a ideal world you'd have a neat balance between the two of them, but if I could choose just one to be the 'complex one' would be Jobs, not encounters.

In P12 you can’t account for someone else’s mistakes, you can’t heal someone who makes a mistake. If everyone doesn’t do the right thing then everyone dies. It’s just boring as hell. Triage is functionally useless in the modern fight because everyone has to play perfectly or everyone loses

Don't forget the boss repositionning itself a lot with the tank having almost nothing to do when it comes to moving the enemy

I love my role having so much "responsibilities" nowadays

Bring back vulns, and damage downs. Basically.
