In low lvl aoe thunder dot potency is doubled and we have manafont at lvl 30, not sure how much that compensate it. Transpose can also be utilized by multi dotting targets while pulling. You can spam thunder every 5 second with transpose.A remedy they could do for that would be slashing a second off Flare (4s -> 3s) on cast time and also normalizing Fire II, Blizzard II, High Fire II and High Blizzard II to have 2.5s cast rather than 3s.
Like, great, nice job for giving us a new fire tool at Lv100, what about Lv50-99? Was it really necessary to reduce the potencies again? Why do we have to do this song and dance of nerfing BLM on expansion launch nearly every time to make sure another caster doesn't feel bad?

I basically never come on here, but after reading the confirmed changes in the patch notes I am frankly SO disappointed. Let me preface this by saying that Black mage has been my main class since I started playing over 6 years ago, but I've never been a huge nonstandard player, I enjoy the standard rotation and never learned non standard because like others have pointed out in this thread nonstandard is only a marginal dps increase in certain situations, standard works just fine for most.
I know that people's response to me saying that will be "well why do you care then" apart from just being disappointed that something that a lot of other players enjoyed seems to be gone bcus SE doesn't like that it exists, I liked the fact that if i ever had the time/desire to optimize my favorite class more, i could. Secondly, a lot of these changes that axe nonstandard also make the standard rotation more rigid, even if the basics don't seem to be changed that much.
Exiting fire phase early will be a more significant dps loss due to how astral soul works, which ironically makes the class MORE stringent, as opposed to the notes on the job guide claiming that they intended to make the class easier. Losing the ability to use sharpcast removes another layer of player choice, it doesnt matter whether you preferred to use it on fire for more consistent uptime or thunder to keep up your DoT, now you just get it no matter what. Removing ice paradox makes zero sense, both mechanically and from a thematic standpoint, removing the ice half of it defeats the point of it even being called paradox. Having an instant cast move with good potency in ice phase that refreshed your time was great, and its odd theyre removing that instead of fire paradox which is basically just spicy fire i, especially now that theyre giving you more firestarter procs anyway.
The leveling of the class still seems like it'll be godawful, which it has been since i started playing. Gee, i sure do love spamming fire i until I get a firestarter proc in fire phase, and now it looks like i need to spam blizz i in ice phase for my mp to regen. Riveting. Instead of doing something like lowering the level enochain and fire/blizz iv are unlocked so people can learn the core of the class earlier, or lowering when umbral soul is unlocked which would make using blm in uwu or ucob so much better. Sorry, I just feel that a lot of these changes seem out of touch, claiming they'll make the job easier when none of this stuff would've been what I wanted when I was a new player, except the sharpcast changes MAYBE, and thats only because fire iii is your only really damaging move until you get fire iv at like level 55 or something. it sucks because black mage is the only class I really find rewarding to play long term in this job, I've found everything else dreadfully boring after learning how it works. I really hope they rethink some of these changes.
"This is Thancred."

The lack of low level Umbral Soul is insane. I guess the intended running through dungeons rotation is now Transpose -> Thunder -> Transpose -> Thunder ad infinitum, with some Scathes in to mix it up, because there's no reliable MP regen. Flare is level 50!! Let the low level BLMs spam Flare.Instead of doing something like lowering the level enochain and fire/blizz iv are unlocked so people can learn the core of the class earlier, or lowering when umbral soul is unlocked which would make using blm in uwu or ucob so much better. Bard actually is getting some good low level quality of life improvements, but what's with poor BLM?

I almost want to say these are incidental. Historically, this type of issue- where a huge revamp messes up low level combat- has been common. Sometimes, like with PLD, they take literal years to address it...
I guess we're all on 8.0 waiting room.
Why shouldnt whe keep using HF for dmgh? With the fire buff is the power by 180 (echonias ignored, that increase it even more).
Pictomancers aoe or Drgs aoe attacks (at last standard attacks) a weaker or around the same lvl.
At last, until whe have flare star, do it looks valid, to keep using HF2. Like whe used it in EW.
Its sad, that its became weaker again (around 70 potency weaker). But, its looks now more equal to other classes.

it's less potency per second than just using flares, if you're aiming for just damage then they're a waste of timeWhy shouldnt whe keep using HF for dmgh? With the fire buff is the power by 180 (echonias ignored, that increase it even more).

Now that I had the chance to play both PCT and the "new" BLM, yeah I will finally drop BLm after all these years.
Thunder feels absolutely awefull to use (at least for me), Ice Paradox is missed as much as I thought in the rotation and High Fire 2 is such a joke now I don't know where to begin.
They optimized the fun out of the job. The ice phase is so short now they could delete it completely from the game and no one would notive I guess. At least Ice Paradox was a nice filler in that time.
Oh and the low level experience is horrific now. BLM was already unfun in this content but now it's just aweful.
I had fun with the job for many years. Now I take the brush.
Maybe I will bother to level it to 100 sometime in the future but rigfht now it's just to clunky.
Wake me up if they ever bother to make the job fun again for veteran players.
Those who like the changes. I'm happy for you, really. Keep the job alive for me and have fun.

God I just did a level 69 dungeon and not having Umbral Soul is actually horrifying. If you fail the last cast, you have no mana at all and open with Blizz II.
I end the mob packs spamming ice spells because the cost of not getting that last ice spell in if the target dies early is huge.
This job genuinely feels awful to play. My God, I guess it really is Picto all the way.
At the very least I hope they move Umbral Soul to level 40 or something and give us back Ice Paradox, because this borders on unplayable frustration at some levels.

I couldn't agree more, this feels awful. I can't even imagine how frustrating it's going to be in actually challenging content.
So this is what it feels like when your job finally joins the braindead club. Feels awful.
What's weird is that it feels super on rails but now mechanically broken all at once. Truly impressive f up.
