An RMT reporting feature FFXIV should copy from WoW.

In WoW, when you report an RMT spambot, it gets muted for the remainder of your login session. I think it also made all their existing posts disappear from your chat frame.

It's value in WoW was diminished somewhat because players constantly log characters off and on to switch to different characters & jobs, which unmutes all the spambots.

Here, since we usually stay logged in with just one character, the mute would last beyond the time the spammer name exists. It also provides a great incentive to report them because one report makes all their annoying crap disappear.

Currently, reporting them has no apparent effect, since they keep polluting chat unless you move out of the city or switch chat to battle mode, which also kills text interaction with other players.

Remember in 7.0 comes the ability to mute specific terms. Otherwise just click on name in chatlog and report for rmt

You know, now that I think about it, city chats were way quieter on JP servers mostly cuz people don't talk in public spaces if they can help it; does anyone playing on them actively notice if gil sellers use the same methods there?

I bring it up cuz often times the way they design(ed) social stuff in FFXIV was with how one community engages with a feature in mind, and not often another one.

RMT chat spam is less prevalent on JP servers. Although it exists, it's rare enough that I forget about them easily. You can sit in a low level main city and not see one for up to an hour depending on the server. You'll still see the standard event shouts like RP or hunts, and the occasional FC recruitment—but even those aren't as much as I see on NA. They seem to like advertising on the Community Finder and Twitter instead of in game. (I haven't looked at their Fellowship Finder though to see if they actually use it or if it's been abandoned and forgotten like on NA.)
