You're right, so the cheaper option is to give your customers a little 'thank you' for having to deal with the issue. You end up looking good, customers are happy, and you don't have to have that 12 lane highway ready.If they had spent a lot of money and time on protecting against DDoS attacks, they could have mitigated the problems significantly. Sure.
That would be a LOT of expensive hardware and network bandwidth sitting unused during normal times when there are no attacks going on.
Would you like much higher subscription prices to pay for all those resources that sit unused 99% of the time?
