If they had spent a lot of money and time on protecting against DDoS attacks, they could have mitigated the problems significantly. Sure.
That would be a LOT of expensive hardware and network bandwidth sitting unused during normal times when there are no attacks going on.
Would you like much higher subscription prices to pay for all those resources that sit unused 99% of the time?
