ddos attacks : urgent action is needed

It's been over a week to two weeks straight now square. i cant farm my achievements or raid, my fc cant host events, my server NN is full of complains of lost crafts, missed legendary fish and canceled raids. Please deal with this even if it means taking the game offline until you can invest in better server protection. the game is completely unplayable and being held hostage

So........your solution to the game having some semi-predictable access at the moment is to make the game completely inaccessible for an undetermined amount of time? You realize that would kill this subscription-based game and the company, right? Let's not get over dramatic about it. SQ can offer some comp time to players and meanwhile everyone can adjust their play a bit until things get sorted. It sucks, but it's hardly the game's fault.

If they were to take the game offline to perform the necessary changes then I can almost guarantee you they would be offline for a very long time, and I don't mean by just 1-2 days if they want to actually do anything meaningful. DDoS will always be around, there is no such thing as guaranteed protection against it -- Only thing it changes is the cost, resources and knowledge needed to take it offline again.

They are honestly better off looking at why people are doing a DDoS in the first place, which if I had to make a bet in part-in-play to do with the payment system changes they've made.

Just because you or your server is affected, doesn't mean everyone or every server is affected. Taking the game down for others wouldn't make it better.

They had really bad DDoS attacks a few expansions ago - like Heavensward or Stormblood. They figured out a way to defend against them and became pretty good at making them ineffective and have done really well for the better part of the 10 years of the game.

I suppose that either they just upped their game, or SE (or a nearby ISP) changed something that resulted in an unfortunate vulnerability.

That makes little sense to me. People who love the game and want to play it wouldn't try to make it unplayable and potentially risk getting banned so that they can never resume their character ever. It's also not likely to result in it being fixed without them at least making a statement to say they did the DDoS and why.

But it's generally not "1 person" that usually does something like this since lots of IPs/machines are involved.

There is not better server protection. We aren't talking about a e-commerce website, where the user does not care where the server is located, as long as it is possible to buy.

the payment changes have also affect RMT vendors and bots. so it could easily be linked to them in regards to the payment changes

the big DDOS attack last time if i recall correctly also happened at the same time they cracked down on RMT or at least tried to

Botnets can be controlled by a single person. You can even "rent" them to go after specific targets. It's kind of scary, but there's no reason to think that this isn't just a single person who's mad.

The DDoS is hitting more than SE, its hitting other businesses and government agencies. Its a particularly nasty mess right now so we will have to wait it out wile the ISPs work on shutting it down.

Open up google, type in: How to prevent or take measures against DDoS

The answers you will get would shock you, especially when you come to posts and threads about the difficulty when it start becoming 4-5-6-7 layers DDoS attacks.

Stop making threads about it, SE can't magically cure this disease, no other big company that is 100 times bigger than SE can't either, not the way you want it to go.
