Pretty confident based on responses so far this is not at all a popular opinion.

Just because something has been in the game since launch does not make it outdated. So I am curious to know what other evidence there is that this mechanic is outdated. By this logic the game is outdated so we should just close it down.

I wonder if part of the reason why this topic is being rehashed now is because Xeno suggested it recently. I think people tend to parrot on whatever they hear without attempting to formulate their own opinions.

It's unfortunate, because I've seen a lot of detrimental takes be propagated that way.

It's also been popping up on a semi-regular basis on these forums for years now, with generally the same exact arguments on either side.
