I would like to save my current appearance for the use the benchmark without actually spending a Fantasia or changing my look. How do I do that? I also have unlocked hair options that I would like to include. Is that possible?

I'm just gonna quote someone who posted a guide on how to add a character including unlocked hair since it's easier and faster that way.
Just gotta note, that if you do this you can't edit said character appearance in the Benchmark since that will remove the unlocked hair and replace it with a basic one.
So you just select the character as the one you want to use without editing it.
Save your current character appearance in the live Game.
Go to: Dokuments, My Games, Final Fantasy XIV and find the FFXIV_CHARA_XX.dat File with the latest Date. (XX representing the random numbers that will be there depending on how many Characters you have created)
Copy this File into the Final Fantasy XIV Benchmark Folder which should be just below the Final Fantasy XIV Folder.
Rename the FFXIV_CHARA_XX.dat File into FFXIV_CHARA_BENCH10.dat (Any number will be okay as long as its not already present.)
Open FFXIV DT Benchmark character Creator and select the saved preset.
Run the Benchmark!
Note: This only works for the Benchmark. You can not use the now preset Hairstyle to create new characters with said hairstyle.
I hope i could help!

That's not what he's asking for.
OP, right click your char on the selection screen and select save appearance data.
Means not the image, but the text in the upper right hand corner listing your characters names. Only real purpose is to check how your character looks with the updated graphics (and remember, character creation is being fixed in the benchmark utility).
Several years plus playing, still feel like a newb/sprout
I at least offered half of what OP asked for in that case, since OP also wanted to include an unlocked hairstyle for the benchmark, which without transfering the character file would be impossible.
One thing to note that if you use an unlocked hairstyle, it seems it doesn't have any physics and will stand out being noticeably lower in quality. At least that is what it seemed like to me.
