Card Unavailable and DDoS Attack...What a lovey day to be in Eorzea.

So, I have a question that I feel needs to be answered, or at least seen.

I am fully aware I am extremely salty, and maybe drawing on my Inner Karen a bit.

It took SE over a week to even recognize that something was wrong with Card Payments, and today there's a DDoS attack that is preventing the entirety of the XIV Population from staying logged in longer than 5 minutes.

HOW IS SE GOING TO SMOOTH THIS OVER WITH THE PAYING CUSTOMER?

I 100% feel, that at this point, SE needs to simply Close Shop for the day and start their maintenance early. Get your assets offline, and FIX THE PROBLEM.

• People have lost their ability to keep their accounts activated.
• People have lost their ability to purchase store items.
• I have to assume that at least 1 person lost their housing situation, due to Demo being active.
• I have to assume that at least 1 person had an anxiety/panic attack, due to their card being repeatedly denied, for days, with no word from SE.
• I am positive more than one phone call was made to the major banks, with customers trying to figure out why their card isn't being accepted (despite a cute picture of a Visa/Mastercard/AMEX being very present on SE's site).
• Your servers are going to be repeatedly ding'd by players trying to log in, and simply exist on the streets, because we know we cannot play the game today, to save our lives.

SE, you guys are really dropping the ball on Communication and Security here. I am very rapidly losing faith.

Their communication is pretty good and they did make a post regarding the DDOS attack. I've been playing since release and can say this kind of DDOS attack isn't a regular thing. Its actually quite rare for FFXIV. I just went off and played ESO for a few hours and have other things to keep me occupied. Its annoying but not end of the world.

The only time you can truly test if ddos mitigation works, is if you dont put your servers down. If the servers are down, ddos attacks are more likely to be stopped/sources detected. Yet thats meaningless in that case as the damage is already done at that point (the server is down as the ddos intended).

And tbf, at least its happening now and not at release. All the knowledge they build up now could be used at release as i woudnt be surprised if it then happens again (and now imagine the queues with it). Better to do some good tests now so at release it becomes significantly harder (and therefor expensive) to do.

I don't know where some people get that the upcoming maintenance is about the mogstation problem. It's clearly stated it's a world, companion app and Lodestone maintenance. Sure the mogstation is off during that time, but when there is no word of mogstation maintenance.

And concerning the DDOS attacks, what more can they do. It's sure over the past month this has become more and more of a problem, that was such a rare occurence in the past, so I guess something must have changed, but starting the maintenance early will not change anything on any of those fronts. That said, I agree they should suspend the auto demo until the payment issue is fixed at least in the areas where they garanteed it would work (Japan, EU and US).

What's the point of launching ddos attack?

The general purpose is to deny service to legitimate players by sending packets of fake data to SE's servers, overloading their capabilities. This means someone or some group of people with no life decided since they had nothing better to do, they would cause some inconvenience for other people.

Someone with little power in their real life might do it to feel powerful (which is kinda pathetic).
Griefing, some people get a big rush out of hurting others for no reason.
Less likely: proof of ability - showing a group that you can do this to SE, so they'll hire you to do it to a company that might actually pay a ransom to stop a DDOS attack.

To show how little of server protection SE has and that needs fixed. Thats the only reason can think of for them.

If nothing else, don't get mad at SE for being under attack.
Or for making a mistake with the new payment processor - debit cards were supposed to keep working. Something went wrong and they needed to be told by enough people that it wasn't an isolated issue. We've done that, and they're working on it. Yes it's taking time, but that doesn't mean they're ignoring us.
Give them the time they need to fix it.

Note that this is coming from someone affected by the malfunction, within a month I will be unable to play with my current payment method. I am not happy but, I've played and enjoyed this game for years. Not even the probability of having to find an alternate payment method or this entire day of ddos attacks could change that.
Remember why we want to pay for this game in the first place, please?
And don't give in because of the attacks, they've beaten them before, they will beat them again.
(Though this is, admittedly, the worst I've ever seen.)

Between this, the whole invalid address fiasco, and the 12 hour long ddos attack, its actually been despair.. I figured since the maintenance was game related that it wouldn't address anything but I was hopeful that it would be addressed.
