I've bought plenty, specifically crafting and gathering gear as the benefits of having the appropriate gear for your level are massive.

As have I. Not sure where you get the idea that nobody buys low-mid level crafted gear, Rokien.

They give indeed exp and gear now.
The problem is, after the bandwagon "quest chain is evil incarnate", now is "quest chain is evil incarnate, and by my total assumption they give sets of gear"

I'm sure in 2.0 there would be still gear that can be only earned by crafting (or buying it from another players).
Like the class only weapons and gears, only obtainable by crafting.

SE can bring for every 5 levels (or 10 levels) 2 types of gear. Quest gear with standard stats and crafted gear with better stats. And of course raided gear with the same stats as crafted gear with 1 materia.
