I think you are hitting on the key point here. While I can respect many people's ideas about 'faster 'more modern' quest' system, they really are talking about the mechanics of the system. Unfortunately they are talking about it in a way that would be counter-productive to the type of atmosphere that Final Fantasy is supposed to have.

By its very nature Final Fantasy is supposed to be all about the journey. I'm not saying its good or bad, or you have to like it or not. But that is one of its hallmark attributes. Spending a lot of time journeying around the world to get things done.

We're supposed to have that feeling of travelling to some distant cave, defeating some creature, talking to some person in a far away village, and returning back to the city to turn in our information/items before going to the Inn and washing up. This is an adventurer's life ^.^ This is how Final Fantasy should be. It may not be for everyone, but surely there is enough room in the world for a non-WOW/GW2/whatever clone? ^.^;
