The 2017 All Saints' Wake event also had citizens of Gridania initially fearing an innocent, wandering Lupin as a potentially dangerous "wolfman" rather than viewing him as the completely sentient Spoken that he was.
I think a lot of people forget that the world of Hydaelyn (I'm not callin' that shit Eitherys after 10 years lol) is still very magic-focused, and you really don't have to stretch the idea into extremes like somehow getting cursed in the First, or even being a victim of an Allagan experiment. Mages literally mess with forces they shouldn't be all the time. Polymorphing is a thing, and so is cursing one's self--or one's companion--through the practice of more forbidden magicks. We've fought bosses in Tam Tara and other dungeons who had been transformed due to contact with the void, forbidden magicks, alchemy, dragon's blood, etc... If you want to get creative and keep his lore within the Source, I'd recommend trying to play with those kind of ideas. It could easily lead to more fun, tangible plots too.
Although if you don't like that suggestion, please keep in mind that people still RP with more wild concepts all the time. So while some character backgrounds might be too out there for myself and others to feel comfortable interacting with, there are also just as many people completely cool with such concepts.
