Different players are going to have different opinions on how important gil is.

To those who get most of the things they want by buying them from others, gil is important. If they don't feel any of the ways to earn gil is fun, they're more likely to turn to RMT.

Having game companies sell game currency direct to players doesn't always have a positive impact when it comes to reducing RMT activity. Certainly it didn't help in WoW's case (but then again Blizzard got stupid and greedy for the $5 per token they were making). The RMT sellers increased the amount of gold received per dollar to stay competitive not to mention they would guarantee fast delivery. How fast a WoW token would get purchased off the AH was unpredictable. Sometimes it was only an hour, other times it would take a couple of days.

There is no solution to RMT other than for players to decide they aren't going to engage with it. That's not going to happen as long as people are more obsessed with who owns what instead of who does what (or better yet, just worrying about what they personally do instead of comparing themselves to others).
