I have found a way to consolidate my items. I hoard items, but only specific kinds. I have a sorting system for it.
I try to have access to as many dye color as I can get my hands on without spending real money. That takes up a sizable chunk of a retainer's inventory. I may not use every color, but it helps for niche situations or in case someone else needs a particular dye color (feels nice to help, ya know?). Once in a while I may also want a particular color that I don't normally use. For reference, I usually use purples, reds, and blues. Once in a while I may need browns, and shades (white, grays, black).
I also collect materia. HOWEVER, I have found the best kind to keep around is the kind that matches the expansion I am working on (In this case endwalker-- so the current highest level of materia). When I move onto a newer expansion I sell it to make room. At one point I hoarded all materia but after a while that was untenable.
I also store housing items. Though, I haven't gotten to use them yet- luckily I don't usually get new furniture. One of my retainers store all of the useful items. The other retainer stores misc items like moogle tomes (they have a lot more space).
As for fishing tackles, I use the chocobo saddlebag and only store current expansion + specific scrip tackles. I do not keep ARR tackles unless I plan to ARR fish, for example (the exception being the versatile lure- I use that to log bodies of water). I have a good bit of fish in there too that I want to one day put into fish tanks.
I also store fireworks in one of my retainers but they take up so little space it isn't really a problem for me.
I do not keep mats around UNLESS it is relevant to what I am crafting or if I plan to sell the mats soon. Mats are the biggest inventory space hog for me. Sometimes I procrastinate cleaning out the mats because it can be a headache to sort them into the four categories (use, sell, throw away). I do store specific crafting mats to a retainer (like silver ore) but that is probably five different mats in total.
In my main inventory I keep: dark matter, potion kits (highest level), a bit of food, things like antidotes, golden needs, spine drops, etc, some misc items (skins, leather, ingots, nuggets, etc) in a specific corner to either sell, store, or throw away, and armor/arms/jewelry that I will be desynthesising very soon.
I have 2 retainers. I have managed to still have space up to this point even with what I hoard. Not sure if anyone else will find this information useful- I guess the biggest takeaway is to consolidate your items into four categories (keep, use, sell, and throw away) then store with your retainers what you don't need to access as often and store in your main inventory what you will use frequently. Your chocobo saddlebag, of course, should only store what you will access outside of dungeons/raids/trails/solo instances.
I do think we need a dedicated bait inventory. It can be annoying to find out I need a specific tackle that I no longer have (though that could be chalked up to poor planning). I plan to one day finish up the entirety of the fishing log. I have 60% of the log completed, the 40% being monster/big fish. Maybe for fishing tackles, only keep particular tackles that are relevant to you- most fish have 0 uses (cannot be put into an aquarium, cannot be used in recipes, cannot be used for a print). Keep tackles that you will use. Most tackles are very easy to obtain.

I love the men in this game
I finally return to the game! Current goal: getting all my jobs to 90
There is no hording problem unless i got like 5 stacks of everything and every dungeon gear and useless token 5x...
I do not want to waste time gathering stuff i could let my retainers get for me to stock, i do not wish to realize i need material xyz for the hottest new item only for it going up 1000% on the MB, its not my fault they feel the urge to add 8-10 new woods, metal and cloth every expansion AND reusing old mats to mix with em.
Dyes and materia are LONG overdue for an solution as well... and still ALL token need to go into currency's tab. And ofc glamour... id grind every single piece of every dungeon if id have the space lol

I’m hoping that with Dawntrail focusing on updating the graphics, other expansions will focus on updating other outdated/problematic systems like glamour and housing.
I’d say 5.5 of my 9 retainers are holding glamour items that I’ve already run out of room for in my newly expanded dresser. The rest of the space is being taken up by housing items that I switch out seasonally, and especially the outdoor items, since you can only put 20 of them in storage! Lastly all the bits and gear for Eureka & Bozja, because every time I think I’m done, I get sucked back in and decide I want another weapon. lol

I hoard I admit. For The Hoard!
Yes tackle sucks and is probably the main reason why my Fisher is only level 50. But to be fair I kinda struggle levelling fishing in any game, FFXIV somehow makes it both better and worse at the same time.
I somehow still don't have a house, been wary of finally pulling that trigger. But I guess being on Balmung where everything is gone in a flash kinda gives me a built-in excuse. So, yes, I hoard, I collect. I don't want to get rid of all of those housing items from seasonal events, crossover events, quest rewards, and whatever. So I did get an apartment, purely to house the inside deco. But that leaves all the outdoor deco I can't do anything with. Because apartment. Apartment is carpet-bombed, well, wall-bombed? with all kinds of posters with other things on the floor to free up space to hold indoor stuff. I would love to see that inventory space increased, even so far as it can hold outdoor items, too.
It wouldn't hurt me one bit if Dark Matter, the clusters and such to buy Materia, and the Materia itself, had their own "tab" section like crafting Shard / Crystal / Cluster. Has this space ever been used next to them?
Speaking of, has anyone ever filled out even 5 or 6 full rows of Quest/Key items? Even if you grabbed every single Clan Mark bill in the game? Wouldn't bother me if we had an extra tab of regular inventory. Ignore the slashed out Aether Compass. Yeah, I know it was moved to Collections.
Would be wonderful if they expanded Currency window. Everything that is Untradable, Unsellable, no gil worth, and purely used for currency to turn in for whatever reason, Totems, Yo-Kai Medals (counts can be included in the, oh I dunno, Yo-kai Medallium?), Alexander / Eden Gate / Deltascape etc. tokens, can have their own tab(s) in Currency window. Special cases can be allowed for quest items that match the above untradable unsellable no worth but are not really currency, like maybe Atma and Alexandrite. But wait, if those are purely for quest items, why are they not in with the rest of the quest items? Items like High Allaghan Aetherstones of course are tradable, are sellable, do have a gil worth, so items like those will remain as is in normal inventory.
I do applaud the Saddlebag, in so far as it is there, and better than nothing. I applaud the expanded Glamour Dresser, although I have yet to glamour a single piece of item, but I do collect and toss them in there. I guess because I do not glamour things (I only went so far as to make some plates) I don't understand how a Glamour Log or something else would work better or different from the current Dresser. I applaud the Armoire and them seemingly quicker to add the seasonal rewards to be allowed in there. I remember many events it seemed we had to wait months or so to toss them in. So not all bad.
For materials and such, those that are in the next set of 10s above my crafters I just sell. Crafters getting over level 60, so immediately anything for level 70+ crafting I sell. As well as any materials too low to craft an item for the first time for the crafting log. Yeah I am one of those crafting every single item once. So I do hoard some materials, not those too high or too low to help me craft something for the first time. Being able to craft directly from retainers would be awesome. I could take it or leave it, it's not too annoying for me when I do a bit of crafting at once.
Who else has a stash of Clear Demimateria and Allagan Pieces and such, purely to double earnings once a week up to the 40,000 cap? I know, chump change for some, it's a nice chunk for my lazy butt. Would be nice to see an increase to 50,000 or something. Slowly eat a tad more of my stash each week.
I rambled on enough! For now.

The Key items tab isn't really an inventory tab, it just looks like one. They've talk about it before.
If an item isn't super rare and/or I don't have an immediate need for it, I don't keep it. Most stuff in the game can be re-acquired relatively easily, if you ever need it in the future.

Y'know, as often as people try to bring this up, it's baffling that they also want a "tackle box."
Players are already complaining about a perceived empty useless inventory space in the Key Items tab (not actual usable inventory slots), but they want a separate inventory that, when they finish or abandon fishing, is going to be left empty and useless?
If they ever do bend to player demands for a fishing bait inventory, 100% within a week we'd have players complaining about all the empty space they don't use and would be asking for more of it to be regular inventory.

I agree.
The solution to the tackle box is of course not inventory space but removing the tackles as items and turning them effectively into stances. Similar to how gig heads worked before the spear fishing rework.
Of course they would remove like 90+% of the baits in the process and keep only a few different ones which would work across all expansions.
It’s a good thing not to answer your enemies. I scarcely ever do. Perhaps Emily is more like me than I am like myself. Perhaps she would rather not answer her friends, even. She keeps it all in her heart.
