The amusing part about all this is how many people have been whining on the forum for the last several years that the game needed a graphics update, bandying it like some kind of panacea of overall game improvement. Are you not entertained?

The graphics update is necessary in terms of both the assets and the underlying game engine. The game does look dated in areas and throwing high resolution textures at the existing infrastructure only goes so far. I appreciate that some players, mod users or otherwise, are very accustomed to how the game currently looks but these changes are a huge win for the next decade of content.

The complaints are not about "the graphic update". They are about changes to character faces. There is far more to the graphic update than jus faces.

Not having the most realistic movement isn't a "barrier to entry". Obviously the MSQ's length is more of a barrier than anything.

Maybe you mean the invisible walls? Those are extremely annoying, but this stops being much of a problem at level 50 when you unlock flying and the expansion areas are bigger and more square-ish with invisible walls in logical places like mountains. Invisible walls have always been normal in almost every game ever except ones that generate or overlap it or stay in a closed environment.
It's not been standard in MMO's, WOW since it's start used hitboxes on the character to collide with the ground plane which is what gives the character a fluid and impactful movement. ff14 went for the movement system where your character is standing on a plane, that plane is on the ground as you press w that plane slides along the terrain and your movement animation plays, because of this they are not capable of fine movement. Movement and responsiveness are far more barrier to entry braking than a long MSQ, I would argue also more important that graphics, because quite frankly alot of players will give up when they find movement janky. FF14's movement system is the weakest in any modern mmo and is not really competitive with any of it's market competitors.

Creating a new shader system is time consuming and this would have taken a lot of dev hours, even if they didn't pick to fix the movement, that time could have been better spent in other places is my point. Say fixing the new player experience by allowing all jobs to be unlockable at level 30 and adding in low level storylines for them, or create more feeder classes that evolve into the jobs so that a new player doesn't have to spend 50 hours of game time playing a class they don't want to play just so they can play something they like. Class fantasy is a huge part of this game so it's really detrimental to new players.

Movement in WoW is responsive because of their higher server tickrate and lack of startup.

Then that just means WoW was pretty unique with that.

I really, really do not see how movement is a barrier to entry. The responsiveness is an issue, sure, especially with it making animations a priority over responsiveness.

I mean, it was pretty standard when it released (as bizarre as it was compared to single player games), but it probably isn't now with modern games challenging the norm. But I don't honestly know to what extent SE will compete with these games. The graphics update looks like the compromise they are willing to make on that, only meeting it half way but not going nearly as far.

Maybe 8.0 can be the physics and character customization update, we will have to see what happens.

It was not unique to wow and it wasn't unique at the time. The issue of movement in FF14 comes down to the 1.0 version which was bad, the new team had a little over a year to turn it around and plane sliding movement is 100X easier to do than collision based movement it's completely reasonable for that to have been the choice back then since adding in jump was already a huge improvement on what was there.

The point I'm making however is not just about movement. The shaders were not going to be what put new players off, they don't really offer great value to the playerbase, there are much larger issues that could have been started now and fixed sooner, but they went with an unnecessary and divisive visual update.

I disagree, game looks really bad, especially considering it's only 10 years old. The implementation might be starting to look like a garbage fire, but that doesn't mean changes weren't needed.

Sorry I strongly disagree. The graphical update is the best thing that is happening for FF14.

Unlike many people like to say, CBU3 listen to players feedback.
I am pretty confident that they are going to take the feedback into account, and that at the end it will be amazing.

Also they will not be able to avoid this topic with the many communication events coming (media tour and live letters...)

Graphical update is a plus, and necessary.

Character redesign is an entirely different & completely uncalled for.
