7.0 Graphical Update - Female Highlander Face 2 - Multiple Eye Issues

Most of mine converted great, but PLEASE SQUARE PLEASE fix Highlander Female Face 2's eyes before launch. Respectfully, it's not even close. I don't recognize my own character!

The real glaring issue is the EYES. My character had a milky effect in her eyes because the pupil in the pre-7.0 models is very SMALL compared to the iris.

In the 7.0 graphical changes, the iris is "large" sized now but that makes a shocking difference. Like, completely different look. The catchlights are also completely different and also masked poorly. It results in this "dead eye" you're seeing in a lot of the reworks.

Not only that, but the iris now has this awful shadowing effect applied to the top third of it for no real reason, so you can only see the full color by angling upward. This looks absolutely horrible from even a little zoom out, like a permanent squint. Please please, rework this.

I truly massively appreciate the efforts artists have put into this but myself and many of my fellow players are wondering if we can accept such radical changes to where nothing we try is making us feel like we're looking at our characters.

Bonus Confusion: Do jawlines not cast shadows anymore??

I've spent hours in the benchmark trying to shake this complete disconnect to the original design.

I agree with the eye/shadow thing
I often use "droopy" eyes on my characters and mine looks very tired now because of the shadow. I'm also a bit sad to loose the "shine"of the lips when using the lip colors and the fact that the "light" option isn't transluscent anymore. Also the fact that they made the eyeshadow go higher on the eyelid creates a weird separation line below the eyebrows.

Also, I don't know why female highlanders don't get high rez eyelashes like the other races do.

I don't mind the other changes as I think the game as a whole look way better in the update but I will have to wait for the finished product when DT launches to decide if I'm going to stay on this race or to switch, because the difference is quite huge in my opinion.

The make up is masking an even bigger issue with this face.

Using facepaint to kill the makeup shows that the eye underneath is COMPLETELY different.

These eye shapes are great and much needed but they are NOT a translation of the eyes choosen by the players. Can these please be made an option, rather than an overwrite?

Oh wow you're right! The eyeshape is completely different! I couldn't pinpoint why my eyes were feeling so off, but seeing your screenshot, it all makes sense.
The eyes are not as round as they used to be and the "border" is a completely different shape too.

I use eye 5 and am very nervous to say the least, they mention a lot of old low-resolution assets in play, as well as "mouths not scaling". But these eyes (and some of the noses) indicate big character changes after all, tech issues aside.

Yeah eye 5 are way more elongated and have a way larger upper eyelid so I can understand why you would be nervous.
Now we wait for the benchmark update and see if they change anything about the eyes..

May as well repost my comparison here and talk about the issues I have with the benchmark.

Quick disclaimer; I used the default gamma setting on benchmark and 0 on live, so the duller shadows on benchmark are a result of a different setting.

For the eyes (thanks Aimed for pointing this out), I normally use eye shape 3, but would likely swap to 4 because I thought the shape looked... off. I'd like to see the shape reverted to be closer to the live version, the benchmark version makes my character somehow look tired and done with life (although the lack of the eye shine contributes most to that). The other thing about the eyes that annoy me is the added eyeliner, most prominent in the second image. I prefer my character with little makeup, using only the eyeshadow face paint, so the eyeliner feels very off, the eyeshadow in the top image is also different in the benchmark as I thought it made it look closer to live.

The skin is also very, very translucent, the subsurface scattering is too strong and doesn't react very well with light, especially backlit in the second comparison. It ends up looking very waxy and dulls the skintone.

The lips are also a victim of that dullness and the colour appears desaturated. The lack of a gloss when backlit is also disappointing.

The second image also very subtly shows a nasolabial fold. It's not super prominent in most lighting, but the backlighting does show the curve where one realistically appears and it makes my character look older.

I'm hoping the updated benchmark will fix the lighting issues, the SSS looks good in the benchmark proper and doesn't look anywhere near as waxy, but I think the eye shape needs to be tweaked, eyeliner needs removing, lips need more gloss, and more prominent eye shine to not look so dead or tired.

Well, the eyes are looking better in a sense, but I'm still upset about how low quality the lashes and the area of the eyes itself look compared to other races.. Also, mine still has the weird separation under the eyebrows

Overall I think the updated benchmark looks fantastic, my character doesn't look as different as she did on the first one. I will still need to get used to the changes but I think she still looks great.
