Go sit on your hands if you have nothing useful to say.

No, not "need", but very useful. I used to use a single-option /nominate but half the time nobody knew how to /vote and if not everyone responded, you had no way to know who wouldn't vote.

It helps party leaders make sure nobody is AFK. It helps make sure party leaders don't miss your "AFK 1m" message and assume you're there when everyone else /'s. What's wrong with that? If you don't want to use it and would rather ask for /'s then nothing's stopping you.

If anyone can offer a valid reason why SE shouldn't implement this that doesn't have to do with team resource management or a "we got along fine without it before" attitude, I'm all ears.

And why shouldn't we question the resource management of the Dev team creating a Ready Check?

EDIT: And may I sit on your hands instead? ^^
