God I hate agreeing with Rokien but he is technically correct. I just tried this with a disc-based game. You can't run the browser while playing the game, it says you must quit the game to do so.
Lore on lodestone works fine, SE isn't the first nor only current developer of MMOs that utilize their website for lore related posting, some other MMOs don't even bother with lore, just stupid fetch quests that's "supposedly related to x lore". This was the purpose of the Playonline Viewer, a hub type program which ran on the consoles too. That way they can easily go to Vana'diel Tribune and boom..read the latest lore articles lol.
Maybe SE already has something in mind 2.0's launcher with the PS3 that could be similar to POL. Thing is though, if it's in-game you can expect it to be largely ignored by players, especially the players SE is trying to ensnare for 2.0, unless of course it gives you gil and exp for reading it, then people will care for it -.-
Even MMOs with in-game FAQ/Newspaper modules get no love from most players lol.
"How I mine for fish?"
"..The FAQ tells you how to mine for fish, it's located with the ? Help button next to your settings (gear icon)."
"Why would I read something? I'm here to play a game not read!"
etc.
As I said, if they make something like POL for XIV's launchers, they can easily attach Lodestone articles to it, that solves that issue.
So what you want is.... the lodestone available in game but it not be the lodestone but be a newspaper instead. I'm going to assume you don't understand the pointlessness of this so I'll spell it out for you.
I do not want my sub fee money going towards developing a news paper system when there is already the lodestone and it would be a LOT easier if they just made the lodestone able to be accessed in game at any time in place of your news paper idea.
Sub fee? I was just talking thinking gil. The newspaper can have other things as well, like who killed what when stuff like that.So what you want is.... the lodestone available in game but it not be the lodestone but be a newspaper instead. How interesting would Xenogears have been if you had to read all it's information on a website rather than in-game?
The game should tell you the story, not a website. This is why the grand company leaders are so boring to me. Yes they have a cutscene that makes them look cool, but if you want any information about, instead of doing it in awesome quest line where you fight/talk with them. You have to go to the website.
That is how you get attached to characters. I used to not like the Ul'dah grand company leader, till I say that he seemed like a pretty cool guy when he swore his loyalty to that little, adoreble, queen/princess of Ul'dah lalafel.
Or Hildibrand, you don't read about him on the website, you see his actions in game and he is a riot. Which is why I like him.
/facepalm
I'm talking about game development money that would otherwise be spent on other things. The main reason I'm even paying for this shitty game is to support 2.0 and if they spend that money on making pointless newspapers when they have the same thing on the lodestone then I'd be pretty pissed off.
And your "other things" can be on the lodestone if they choose to do that. Drop the newspaper idea, it's pretty redundant since there is the newspaper here on the lodestone and it would just be easier to implement an in game menu based source of accessing the lodestone.
This makes no sense. You interact with characters in game and you learn about the story in game not on the lodestone. The lodestone just has extra info that was not fit in game. I don't see how an autobiography fits into any type of quest. How interesting would Xenogears have been if you had to read all it's information on a website rather than in-game?
