This is a good example of how something that is technically correct actually gives a worse result than something that is technically wrong. The eye glint texture is needed to avoid the uncanny dead look, it doesn't matter that the new system "is more realistic". It doesn't work with the brain's expectation of how it should look. And this is from Benchmark (copied 1 to 1 from saved appearance feature in login screen):
I... am speechless. He's like a totally different character.
[-] Eyes missing today's catchlight texture would left him looking 'soulless' in places without proper lighting.
Yeah those new eyelashes are way too uniform. They look fake. It would be fine to have a fake eyelash option, but I wish makeup would not be forced on us.Here are the changes to the eye-area that I was talking about:
Left is old, right is new.
As you can see, the eyebrow is pretty much a different model, much wider and a completely different colour.
The eyelashes are massively more thicker, which darkens the upper part of the eye quite a bit. The eyelashes also essentially add a different perceived shape to the eyes.
There are also different skin folds where the eye ends in the direction of nose, or rather a lack of those folds.
The eyes are a window to the soul, I am not happy about these changes at all.
From what I understand, there are going to be a bunch of new animations and expressions coming with Dawntrail. I would imagine the extra bones in the face are to make use of that, and the changes to some model's facial structures are meant to accomodate the new expressions that the old models would warp or distort when making.
I noticed a lot of skin color variation not appearing for Male Viera in a few other photos when casted under lighter shade (from the area). I noticed a difference between looking at my Elezen in the same area shade and the Viera, the color variation and direct model shading seems to be lower, making the chin disappear into the neck when looking at them. Hope they notice if that is a problem.
What I'm worried about is our current facial expressions looking distorted though. I was pretty horrified when I tried out some emotes in the CC.From what I understand, there are going to be a bunch of new animations and expressions coming with Dawntrail. Like why does my girl have a joker smile now??? It used to look so genuine, now it looks kinda sarcastic. It's pinched up at the corners for some reason. How is this supposed to be better?

If I didn't know better, I would think those were two different facial expressions applied on the emote. I really get what you mean. What I'm worried about is our current facial expressions looking distorted though. I was pretty horrified when I tried out some emotes in the CC.

Mao sad. Fellow Au Ra on left has kind smile. Au Ra on right is SCARY!What I'm worried about is our current facial expressions looking distorted though. I was pretty horrified when I tried out some emotes in the CC.

I'd like to point out that we can't touch the self-lighting thing in the benchmark. You know, the light that just self-illuminates the character regardless of external lights? For people who deactivated that entirely in the game, like me, it looked very weird. But remembering it existed and putting it back in Endwalker, it looked a lot closer to what's already in with this option about halfway or above on the slider.
I think a lot of lighting issues people are pointing out come from this. They should have given us the option, let us see how it looked without it. But ultimately, it means it might be easily fixable by playing with this setting.
Some assets are clearly broken, like the bendy ears and the mole on M viera, or questionably edited, like the moon kitties' fangs. I think a lot of other things are very nice.
Another eye shape change (type3)
I have mviera veena face 3 character as well and there I don’t even know where to start.
