I might be the oddball here, but some people's characters in the benchmark actually looks so much better compared to what we have currently. However, I get the sentimental value of the "identity" of our characters. They may look like a completely different person, even with the same features. But-- I really did expect this to happen. When any sort of graphical update happens; it's bound to change the skeletons of the character creation. I think in the long road, the devs are doing a good thing for us, and I believe they are not done with this project either; and it may take them longer than 7.0 to really get everything updated properly.
I would say that identity is more or less 70% of what fuels or arguments. Some characters look good, some might even say better, but they don't look like the players' characters. And that is extremely important, as Yoshi P himself said. Their stated philosophy for this change is to maintain the identity of the characters.
That is why I feel so upset when they change the actual structure of eyebrows and eyelashes, which in turn changes the entire feel of the eyes. I expected fundamental changes to graphics affect the way characters look, and was somewhat ready for it, but I was not ready for actual assets being seemingly deliberately made different for no discernable reason.

I wish I felt that way. If my characters looked different but still good or better than before, I'd be satisfied. My problem is that I feel the new textures and shapes are a huge downgrade and make the characters look much worse.I would say that identity is more or less 70% of what fuels or arguments. I could accept them being different. But them being worse is another level...

I do think that there are as close to objective downgrades as can be in many cases too, like the skin looking weird for the vast majority of characters, and the eyes often lacking lustre. But what I mean is that identity is so important that even in the cases where a character happens to look better according to the majority of observers, it does not counter our arguments: we want our characters.I wish I felt that way. This is beyond "lighting"
there is no coping
this face needs drastic help

Just wanted to leave a comment saying that I fully agree with the OP, my male Viera looks extremely different with the new graphics and it's left me a little worried as I was looking forward to playing DT with him. I'm hoping these issues are addressed by release, if not eventually with time.
Both images below use the same character data, my main complaints are the faded eyebrows, the beauty mark, the different lips, and the eyes/eyelashes overall.

These issues become more apparent during the benchmark as well.

There are a lot of people in here learning for the first time that they have face blindness, and making it everyone elses problem. I'm glad you don't see a difference. As the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. For those of us who CAN notice the differences, its extremely jarring, and acting like a massive swath of people noticing something is just some outlier that can be ignored is ignorant at best and outright malicious at worst.
the biggest complaint is that all lip color is in matte, without a gloss option
for most F characters this seems to be peoples biggest issue
